I'd much prefer Baez or Castro is dealt, but say Soler is dealt for a young starter like Danny Salazar. Would anyone object to a RF platoon of Coghlan and Chris Young? Combined they'd cost you roughly 6.5 to 7M. Young put up a 162wRC+ against lefties last year and Coghlan put up a 125 wRC+ against righties. It seems like a relatively inexpensive way to get well above average production while biding time for whomever takes over long term.

If Soler is gone and it's not Heyward, I could see Zobrist getting a lot of time there. That platoon isn't bad though if we're cheaping out there for some reason.

1st time poster long time lurked.

I like the idea of having Baez playing 3rd against lefties and putting Bryant in right.

Yes, welcome!

I want Matt Moore, he'll rebound next year. Whether or not, Soler will do it? IDK.

I'd also see what Washington wants for Strasburg in a separate trade with Castro being a piece of it.

Matt Moore? Gross.

He'll be back. His velocity was up in his final couple of starts. Both him and Soler have the potential to be 3-4 WAR players next year depending on progression and health. Long-term, Moore has the higher ceiling (also has the lower floor).

I honestly didn't like him much even when he was "good"

Im in for buying low on Moore. I really think he was damaged goods as soon as his major league career began.

guess it depends what buying low means. i wouldn't trade soler for him.

bosio can work magic tho.

"back" is a bit of a relative term, no? The good version of Matt Moore as a pro has been a FIP hovering around 4.00. He has to get back to that level after 2 years of injury and ineffectiveness, then take another step forward to be a 3-4 win guy. Not that he's a terrible target, especially if the Rays don't want to pay him 7 million to figure it out, but definitely not as the target for a guy of Soler's talent.

Because of Bosio, Moore could be interesting. But he wouldn't be remotely high on my list. In no way would I deal Soler for him.

I think we'll look hard into trading for the elite guys(Gray, Archer) before heading to Salazar/Ross/Teheran land.

If we trade for an elite guy, I'd say its more likely we add depth thru FA and spend money on hitting.

If we trade for a mid rotation type, I'd say its much more likely we pay up in FA for an SP. Less money on hitting this way. But we've dealt less of ours away as well.

Why not Chapman? Scared to take a risk?

Because we need/want a starter more than a reliever and we're spitballing ideas? Just a thought.

He wants to use Chapman as a starter.

The answer is because trading a huge haul for Chapman, paying him 10+ million, hoping he pans out in the rotation, then trying to extend him/sign him in free agency is a really bad use of resources. If any of those things were different, if he had more team control, or a lower 2016 cost, or his trade cost wasn't astronomical or if we could be more certain of him as a starter, then that might be a different story. But it's not so trading for Chapman is a bad idea in general, and it's especially bad with the eye on making him a starter.

Trading for a mid rotation guy is nuts unless you think his ceiling is much higher. I really just disagree with any philosophy or transaction that suggests aiming for the middle. Aim high so that when you miss there's still room to work. Moore's a decent gamble if you can get him for peanuts, but you're probably not soooo....Same with a guy like Heaney or Salazar or Ross or Teheran. Not enough physical talent for the buck would be my take. Plus you just want a monster mentally and I think all those guys are a little soft for what the Chicago Cubs can and should be sooner rather than later.

Gray or Archer have everything I want but the size to take us to 2019-2020. Hence why I am all about that guy on the Reds and the other 27 YO lefty I'd want with him. There's your TOR monster and BOR/swing guy right there.

Salazar, Ross, and Teheran have a ceiling much higher than you are giving them credit for. They all fit into your first sentence perfectly.

I like Salazar more than every guy mentioned recently in this thread other than Archer.

Chapman absolutely can and should be starting. I honestly have no idea why so many here don't buy that in this day and age when we've seen several guys convert successfully, none with his kind of talent and many without his health or even size.

If you convert him, how many innings do you think he can throw in his first year as a starter?

I like a Moore gamble, but more as the 2nd starter this off season. That said, I worry about the cost. I would not give up Soler in a deal for him. I would, however, note that the jury is still out on the Days FO. Their big trade last year is still iffy.

I also would not want Chapman as the main SP addition, as it's still risky, from an adjustment perspective, as well as timing (relative to future costs). That combination makes it tough for me to see a package that makes sense.

I would be open to a Soler swap that nets Strasburg, but I'm not sure that's enough. Hence why I've said that if a Straburg trade happens, I think there is a third team.

160-180. Liriano workload with more size, health, youth, and stuff.

So 3x his typical workload in his first year?

That seems unlikely.
