It was always a flawed argument that the Pirates had no recourse against Madison Bumgarner in last year’s National League Wild Card.

Maybe, just maybe, if Edinson Volquez had kept it close, that game plays out in a different way. It’s a lot to ask a pitcher to throw six or seven scoreless, but that was what it took to have a chance.

This year, Gerrit Cole didn’t have what it took, either. That fact lingered longest after a venue-record 40,889 had filed out of PNC Park on Wednesday night, mourning a 4-0 loss to the Cubs.

The Pirates lined up their 25-year-old Brahma bull for just this scenario weeks in advance, but Cole was off right from the start, eventually departing after five erratic innings and the Pirates down four to Cy Young Award favorite Jake Arrieta.

“It burns,” Cole said after the third-shortest start of an otherwise outstanding year. “It stings. It sucks. All the negative things you could come up with. Runs are at a premium in a game like this, so you know you have to keep them at bay. I did my best. I just wasn’t good enough.”

Not relevant, but the guy who wrote that is a friend of mine. Went on his Internet radio show earlier this week to talk about the game.

I swear I called Achwarber hitting a HR that drove on Fowker this game.

I've been a little bit of a ninny with regard to Arrieta pitch counts at the end of this season and I had absolutely no problem at all having him go all 9, I figured he would as soon as he got out of the 6th inning jam.

It's the biggest moment of the season, the man has never missed a beat or look labored. He's gonna pitch until he can't get people out.

You have to at that point. His velo was a little off as was his command but even at his subparagraph, he's great.

Unless it's a deciding game, if they get up 4 again, maybe you pull him after 7 and save his arm.

We'll see the effects next year, if it happens.

I was REALLY drunk last night and just noticed the bat flip by Schwarber. I could watch that all day.

Please win Cubs, so the BFIB will hate us.

Cuts out the best part, but oh well

The best part about that video is you can see every single Cub fan in the RF bleachers stand up while the Pirates fans sort of slump down

That's exactly what I did the second he hit it. So awesome.

When I die, instead of a funeral I want loved ones to gather and watch a hologram of the Schwarber HR playing on a loop.

I'll take the upcoming Javy one that will be even better

Imagine a perfect Javy batflip on the walk-off that eliminates the Cardinals at Wrigley early next week.

Sam Miller's BP recap is a bit heavy on prose, but I especially liked this part: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=27638#commentMessage

It’s just a rotten way to go. Last year, when so much was made of the Giants’ ability to leverage Madison Bumgarner’s otherworldliness, by having him throw 33 percent of their postseason innings, like can you even imagine such a thing, 33 percent? But for the Pirates, 100 percent of the postseason was against Jake Arrieta. If you stretched this postseason out on a molecular level so that it lasted forever, there'd always be Jake Arrieta, in the beginning and in the end, the everpresent sun around which the whole Pirates solar system revolved, and it would be an evil sun that burned holes in their umbrellas and vomited sun gas all over their pets.

Just appreciate for a second how lucky we are that we were all born under the good sun.

got the game and CSN post game saved on my DVR, I think tonight is the perfect time to revisit this one with less stress and less alcohol.

Did you guys discuss/hear the story Theo told last night about how he told Schwarber he just missed putting one in the river before and needed to do it, and Schwarber said something to the effect of, "Grab a kayak."

Cardinals are in trouble. Cubs are probably the best team in baseball. Pretty sure they ended up with the highest team WAR.

Last night was amazing.

More impressive HR, Floyd's with the parrot mascot or last night's?

This was the best home run since kerry wood's game 7 against the marlins.

Nothing will ever top that in my opinion, unless it won an NLDS/CS/WS for us.
