It's time to explore the playoff roster possibilities. Do we drop at least 1 pitcher(Hunter, Haren come to mind) due to a mysterious and unexpected injury on Oct. 5th and add a big bat off the bench(Baez)?

Will be interesting to see how much playing time and what roles the Sept. call-ups are given.

As the schedule falls, we wouldn't necessarily need a 4th starter due to days off. Strop, Grimm, Rondon, Hunter, Wood and the 4th starter, whoever it is (Hammel is scaring me), would be a start for the bullpen. Probably throw a couple more arms in there (I hope Motte's not one of them and if Soriano is one I'm going for the heroin).

Baez v. Herrera as defensive replacement/last-ditch pinch-hitter. Everything else probably falls the way it is now barring injury.

Does anybody know if the teams get to set a different roster for the WC Game and LDS? I seem to remember they are two completely different rosters.

That's correct.

I do not want to see the assassination of the playoff roster thread by the cowards derwood and bob

You were probably one of those "5 outs" guys in 2003

You're probably one of those "don't mention the no-hitter!" guys.

Next time the Cubs are 5 outs from the World Series, I'm going to say they're 5 outs from the World Series. And when it's 1 out I will say they are 1 out from the World Series. Then when it's no outs I'll act like a lunatic.

I want Javy, Carl Edwards Jr., and Pierce Johnson all on the playoff roster.

Bye, Herrera, Haren, and James Russell?

pierce johnson seems surprising

is he on the radar as a sept call up?

First time for me too, David. Don't know if you break a young pitcher in during the playoffs, but Joe Maddon threw the book away a long time ago.

Honestly, I'm not sure. But, he is similar to Edwards, in the fact that both have been pretty unhittable throughout their minor league careers. Both have had a bit of a problem with control lately. But, I am wondering if Johnson's stuff might play up a bit out of the pen. And, honestly, I just don't like James Russell. I think Johnson would be better immediately. And then you could have several guys that could go multiple innings out of the pen. That way, you could use Richard and Wood as LOOGY/long men. And I wouldn't have to see Russell come in to face Adrian Gonzalez or whoever.

If today's lineup is going to be the lineup going forward (no reason why it shouldn't be), then Herrera is the only LH bat off the bench, unless you want to assume LaStella who has barely played baseball in the last year is a better option. Herrera is also pretty good defensively at 3 IF spots. Herrera will be on the playoff roster, if the Cubs have a playoff roster.

Dear god, why? They all suck.

As do Herrera, James Russell, and Dan Haren.

Unless we can retroactively go back to the trade deadline and improve those spots on the roster...

Except, Herrera is just kinda meh at three infield positions defensively, and who cares if he can hit left-handed when he is good for 29 wRC+ left-handed this year.

Duke Silver for 2015 MVP.

We probably ought to have a September roster thread before this.

I'm all for calling Pierce Johnson up considering we have to put him on the 40 man after the season anyway.
