Schwarber has been bad the past three weeks and is not a good defender. His value is entirely as a LH bat and there may be other value that takes priority if he can't get it going.

Castro is a bit redundant with Baez to the point where both may not be needed and Joe takes one.

I have 14 hitters and 11 pitchers, but Joe may have 12 or even 13 pitchers on the roster if he thinks he'll need them.

Over his last 29 games, he has a .704 OPS (.165/.287/.417). He's still walking and hitting for power. The biggest issue has been a .155 BABIP and a slightly elevated strikeout rate. Sure, he probably needs to make some adjustments, but luck hasn't exactly been on his side lately either. I would be stunned if they left him off the roster.

If you go back the last 30 games his OPS jumps all the way to .793.

Oh I know. I was just showing that even though he was "struggling", he was still providing value offensively and that his struggles were due in large part to some shitty luck. He needs to be on the playoff roster.

Oddly enough, no one is arguing that he should be left off.

not should. you're arguing that he could. if he's healthy, there is zero chance he'll be left off.

Exactly. Same with Castro IMO. I know many love Baez and do not love Castro, but the guy has gotten us multiple big hits thoughout the season, and right now is a better hitter than Baez. There's no way Joe doesn't include Starlin. No way.

In a hypothetical NLDS game 2, I wonder if it's looking more likely that Hendricks, with a very short leash, will get the start instead of Hammel. Just looking at his fangraphs page, Hendricks has had a much better year than i initially thought as his ERA is a bit inflated with an LOB% a shade under 70%.

Although it's probably easy to make a correlation between his below-average LOB% with below-average stuff.

Hendricks has been pretty good for 5 innings but struggles when he reaches 75 pitches / 6th innings.

Hammel has had a tendency to suck in the first inning, but when he's good, he tends stay good longer.

I don't know if these stats can really tell you anything about future performance, but I would think you'd want to go with Hendricks and have a quick hook for somebody like Wood coming in by the end of 5 or beginning of 6 at the latest.

He's looked okay to me, idk if he's looked good enough to get a playoff roster spot. I guess maybe in the WC game just because we won't be taking any other SP other than Arrieta and maybe Lester. I don't see how he gets a DS/CS/WS roster spot.

Haren is the only of the 3 that has had any success against the Cards this year. I'd probably lean him or Hendricks because of recent starts, and the fact Hammel has the 1st inning issues. But I wouldn't expect Haren to give me more than 3. Hendricks, I'd hope for 5 but obviously be willing to pull any of these guys very early.

Rondon, Strop, Grimm, Rodney, and one of Wood/Richard (probably Wood) are locks for the roster. Cahill, the other of Wood/Richard, Ramirez, Edwards, Hunter, Haren, and Rosscup are all in competition for 2-4 spots. If it's a 9 man pen then Edwards has a pretty good shot. 8 man pen and it's a toss up. 7 man pen and little chance he's picked.

I think Cahill is a lock, or extremely close to one anyway. And I'd say Hunter and Rosscup are extremely close to not having a shot.
