I should rephrase that a little. I want to see those three in September to see if there is a chance that they might be slightly better than the plethora of replacement- or sub-replacement-level players that litter the end of our bench.

I really think Johnson gets slept on a bit. His control seems to be coming around too. No idea if he's under consideration or not, but I definitely think he should be. We're FAR from being 25 deep, dismissing guys like him, Edwards, and Javy is laughable. What titans do we have that indisputably would be better than them?

Does anybody know if the teams get to set a different roster for the WC Game and LDS? I seem to remember they are two completely different rosters.

That's correct.

I didn't know this. So teams could go into the WC game with, like, a 9-man bench?

Yep. They're considered two different rounds so teams can do whatever they like.

Sorry, you might have to stop putting Fowler on those rosters:

According to Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Francisco Giants are looking to add an outfielder after Hunter Pence suffered an oblique injury, which will send him to the disabled list. The Giants feel they must add an outfielder for the playoff run they hope to make. As of Thursday, the San Francisco Giants are two games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West, and three behind in the NL wild card race.

The answer to the San Francisco Giants’ desperation may be Dexter Fowler, who was placed on revocable waivers on Tuesday by the Chicago Cubs. Fowler has been having an average year, hitting.252 with a career high 13 home runs and 35 RBI.

Why in God's name would someone be paid to write this.

Wow. That's dumb as [expletive]

I love how it just says "three behind in the NL WC race" without mentioning that the team they're trying to overtake right now would be the team the guy they want to trade for is on. VERY CRAFTY, SPORTS GUY.

I assume that site is something along the lines of bleacher report considering this is the byline.

Ehh, he's having an average year.. career high in homers already, such an averagey thing to do.

Yeah, Mike Trout is having an average year, too. I wonder if the Angels would be inclined to trade him for a Chris Coghlan, who is having a career year.

Did you read the whole article? The idiot goes on to write:

The Cubs are poised to make their first postseason appearance since 2008. It is currently unknown if they would trade Fowler, given his contribution to the team, and as they hold the second wild card spot. However, one of the San Francisco Giants’ many pitching prospects may sway them. In terms of pitching, Chicago’s farm system is quite thin, and at this point, anything could help.

Adalberto Mejia, Kyle Crick, Ty Blach, and Sam Conrood all come to mind as possible pitching prospects who could be one the move.

Pretty sure Inquisitr is one of those crowd sourced article websites like Examiner where they accept articles about pretty much anything as long as it's "good", which I assume means it's not written like it was by an 8 year old

It read like he was trying his hardest to not say that the Cubs are the team the Giants are chasing for the WC, like he knew this was a terrible article, but he was still going to write it, dammit.

9 Soler

8 Fowler

7 Schwarber

6 Russell

5 Bryant

4 Coghlan

3 Rizzo

2 Montero

Bench- Castro, Jackson, Denorfia, Ross, LH IF (LaStella or Herrera)

Starters- Arrieta, Lester, Hammel, Hendricks

Bullpen- Strop, Rondon, Grimm, Wood, Russell and then 2 of Hunter, Rodney, Motte, Ramirez.

I'd guess Motte has a spot if healthy.

You don't have a spot for Javy or just taking a wait and see approach? I also think they might be holding a spot for Berry as their Dyson.

Who do you take off for Javy or Berry? Do you really need a 3rd backup OF, especially with Coghlan also being able to play there? Javy will have to really hit his way on the team, unless Soler doesn't make it back.

You probably don't need 7 relievers for a 5 game series with 2 off days(or a 7 game series with 3 off days). You also probably don't need Denorfia and Jackson when there's 4 other OF plus Castro and Baez for RH hitters.

Do you honestly think a guy who has gone with 8 or 9 relievers all year, will go with less than 7 when he has 1 less starter to have to keep a spot for?

Yes. On the high end you're talking about 20 innings over 7 days, 6 relievers is fine for that.

Best I can see, Maddon took at least 7 relievers every postseason with the Rays.

I really think Jackson makes Denorfia expendable. You'll have Jackson and Bryant capable of covering all three positions if needed, and then Coghlan too.

I'm pulling for Baez as much as anyone, but I don't know if he'd be the type to contribute much in a situation where he'd be getting one at bat a game against, most likely, a top reliever. Barry on the other hand...I don't see how Denorfia, as the second or third RH option off the bench, offers more than he does

The way Maddon has been talking Javy up and the way he's willing to put young players right in there for regular playing time, I wouldn't be surprised if he's in the lineup 3-4 times a week or more in September
