From MLBTR:

The Mets are still willing to deal Jon Niese, but are asking for a player with multiple years of control in return, Stark tweets. The southpaw has turned up his performance of late, racking up eight straight quality starts (at least 6 innings pitched, no more than 3 earned runs) since a run of rough outings to end the month of May. He is playing on a $7MM salary this year and represents a $9MM tab for 2016, but can be controlled thereafter through a pair of options ($10MM and $11MM, respectively, each with $500K buyouts). Given New York’s evident budgetary restrictions, it has seemed that moving Niese’s salary could be a way for the club to free resources to allocate to the struggling offense, but it’s not clear whether they’ll have much hope of pulling that off in a single transaction.

How about Castro + pitching prospect for Niese and Daniel Murphy. Russell takes over SS while Murphy plays 2B.

While the Dodgers and Red Sox are unlikely to want to part with their most talented youth -- Corey Seager and Julio Urias in Los Angeles, and Mookie Betts and Blake Swihart in Boston -- Jayson Stark reported that the Phillies are willing to go for a balance of quantity and quality in a Hamels' deal. That would mean six -- six! -- prospects for Hamels. While it obviously depends on which six, if one of these teams really wants Hamels and everything his contract represents compared to this winter's options, then they'll have to pay up that number or something reasonably close to it.

There's really nobody left in the system I'd shed too many tears over losing for Hamels (except Javy, but purely because I love him as a fan). I'm sure the Cubs would prefer to do quantity over quality, too.

Quantity is ideal for the Cubs, that's where they can beat anyone.

Too bad quantity does not add up to quality.

If I'm the Dodgers I don't even blink at giving up a 19 year old for Cole. Their resources are practically limitless.

Am I crazy for thinking that - at least in the short term - the Cubs need a bat much more than another starter? Obviously having both is ideal...

When you're relying on Clayton Richard, Dallas Beeler, and an injured Tsuyoshi Wada for the 5th spot, I think starting pitcher is clearly the biggest need.

Plus, what real difference-maker is available as a bat + easily slots into the everyday lineup? Another starting pitcher provides a real impact, IMO.

I got this info from my uncle who could or could not be delusional and blasted but he said a Dbacks reporter said Cubs have been in involved in talks regarding Ziegler/DeLaRosa

A guy who works for BA and frequents OH, is claiming the Dodgers have a done deal for a pitcher and the announcement is coming in the next 24 hours. No details beyond that. I can't imagine it would be Price already.

I'm not loyal to Fowler and would love to see Justin Upton here.

I think you at least have to explore what a package would cost. There are some intriguing options out there: Shields/Upton (Justin, not the terrible one), Bruce/Leake, OR if you're willing to throw the bank at someone, Price/Cespedes, Reddick/Gray.

looks like we're sitting this one out. kind of embarrassed about the extent to which i wouldn't mind seeing if we could get something for coghlan.

@ESPNChiCubs: Theo: “If we do something on the bigger end it will involve players that will help us beyond this year...

@ESPNChiCubs: ... If we do something on the smaller side it will probably be more for a trental.”

This appears to be a throw away statement, but I personally think(hope not) that it takes us out on Zobrist. Based on the amount of interest he's got, someone is going to pay way up on him.

Absolutely zero percent chance Philly would take that deal

This is in reference to...?

Sorry, forgot to quote -- Baez and Castro for Hamels

Oh, yeah that's not gonna happen. One of them? Yeah, perhaps. Not both.

There should be zero incentive to overpay for Zobrist for us. At best, he would get a dash of time in the IF, with his main value in the OF. We're better off finding a cheaper option for the OF than to overpay for Zobrist. Still say Rayburn makes a ton of sense, but the price on him may be going too high as well.

Castro has barely any value at all, and Baez is maybe a top-50 prospect right now? Yeah, that's probably not enough for Hamels by a large margin.

Less to do with actual value, more to do with Cubs probably not willing to give up their two best middle infield options outside of Russell in the same deal.
