i hope i'm wrong, but i expect the return here to suggest the cubs were pricing castillo as a waste of a roster spot.

It could just be optimism, but I don't know if that's the case. The whisperings this spring were that Castillo was getting priced as an every day catcher under control for several years, which really, is not wrong(especially if his framing has improved like this year indicates). I get that they need to move him eventually, but I don't know what would have happened to make them *need* to get a return for Castillo today. Baez isn't going to come up to sit the bench, Alcantara does not look ready to take on a supersub role, La Stella may have just had a setback(and Herrera and a RP should be in front of Beef on the chopping block for him anyway), and Denorfia and Olt are both dead. Add in the fact that he's going to Seattle, who is just dumb enough to make a desperation move(or a move they feel is normal and the FO feels is proper value), and I'm still holding out hope for a good return. Plus there's room in between in this case, since like I mentioned there's a lot of MLB ready guys in various stages of prospect failure the Cubs might be able to rehabilitate.

PS - this deal is another counterpoint to the 'tightest lipped front office around' rhetoric, as we've known the Castillo side of this deal for a little while now but no news from the Seattle end.

hell the guy we got for scott [expletive] hairston currently is in AA with a .9 whip and a 5.something k/bb ratio in AA (yeah as a 23 year old)

what ever happened to the campana guys?

That might be because Welington is by far the most noteworthy part, which means the Cubs are getting nobody people know. Hope I'm wrong, but I just don't see major interest in Castillo and the Cubs might have finally realized they don't want three catchers anymore and were willing to part with him cheap despite what they said in Spring Training.

Erick Leal, first time in full season ball this year. Not terrible results, but not as promising as his AZL performance.

There was another 17 year old who seemed promising at the time too right?

Let me google...

Jesus Castillo

did he get hurt?

I don't understand.

You are suggesting that the fact we know Castillo was on the trading block but didn't know Seattle was going to be his destination means the Cubs front office is not tight lipped?

They went out and acquired two catchers. Everybody knew the next move was dealing Castillo. I don't think it had nothing to do with being tight lipped or blabbing to every reporter in town.

I believe he's referring to the fact that everyone knows Castillo has been traded and we don't know the return

IDK why either side of that necessarily has to leak from either FO in particular, though. (granted, it is the local chicago guys who confirmed the deal after passan)

Only thing I don't like about the trade (not even knowing who they got back) is that I had convinced myself Montero was putting up such good numbers because he was fresh and strong from only playing about three full games per week.

I'll echo TT's sentiments. The Mariners are an exciting fit. They've got some guys that could be fits for the bullpen or even the back end of the rotation, depending on how much their FO has soured on them.

If they were pricing him that low, why carry 3 catchers for a month and a half? Surely they could've ditched him at a low price over the winter.

Seems to me they were holding firm on his price.

Presumably they dropped his price when the roster squeeze and bullpen trouble became more pressing.

Hopefully they get a non 40 man pitching bullpen prospect.

Can still play 3 games a week with Ross catching the other 3! :good:

Passan's tweet is an hour old. Castillo may be the only major leaguer involved, is in San Diego and has to meet his new team in Baltimore. I don't think this says anything about the relatively tight lippedness of the Cubs front office.

wtf does this even mean? they want an old one?

It's poorly worded, but I think the takeaway is that the Red Sox weren't interested in paying for young catchers(read: multiple years of control), when they have multiple young guys who will be great options in future seasons. They wanted a stop gap, and the Cubs were likely not pricing Castillo as a stop gap.

If they were asking for something of value why would the Mariners trade for him?

Matt Brazis and Jake Brigham. Hairston is the only comparable player I can think of where we got something interesitng.
