super horrified that montero is immediately going to get injured now but glad to be done with three catchers. it's just completely untenable, especially given that we insist on carrying a million pitchers.

Castillo was a weird player for me. He seemed to always GIDP, K or pop out in a clutch spot but hit pretty well with no one on base. And then there was the framing issue despite his success throwing out runners. I'll always remember him for his HR and GW RBI (which I was sure was a DP off the bat) on 4/21 in Pittsburgh this season!

Career with men on 601 PA

.257/.328/.414

Bases Empty 515 PA

.249/.313/.384

Men in scoring was a bit lower 282 PA

.208/.304/.308 but with a .261 BABIP compared to around .320 for the other situations.

The Mariners are an exciting partner, a lot of interesting MLB ready guys and they're generally a team that evaluates differently so there's a chance to get good value here. I'll pour one out for my dream of the Montero/Castillo straight platoon, but I ended up being fine with the 3 catcher thing more than I thought I would. Probably because I didn't anticipate that Denorfia, La Stella, and Olt would all spend the majority of the season to date on the DL.

wtf does this even mean? they want an old one?

It's poorly worded, but I think the takeaway is that the Red Sox weren't interested in paying for young catchers(read: multiple years of control), when they have multiple young guys who will be great options in future seasons. They wanted a stop gap, and the Cubs were likely not pricing Castillo as a stop gap.

i hope i'm wrong, but i expect the return here to suggest the cubs were pricing castillo as a waste of a roster spot.

If they were pricing him that low, why carry 3 catchers for a month and a half? Surely they could've ditched him at a low price over the winter.

Seems to me they were holding firm on his price.

Presumably they dropped his price when the roster squeeze and bullpen trouble became more pressing.
