I think they are hoping Hoiberg will be like Kerr. He's white, has a nearly identical hair color and style, had similar game when he was in the pros, worked in the front office of an NBA team, runs a motion offense and managed to coach his players to quality defensive results.

I am not in love with the hire, but I like it more than I would hiring a re-tread like Gentry or reaching again for someone with zero track record like Del Negro. So let's look on the brghtside of this.

Hoiberg understands talent evaluation at both the pro and college levels, he coached at the pro (albeit briefly in Minny as an assistant) and college level, his players appear to worship him, and the results have been good. I am especially impressed by his record at Iowa St.

For example, prior to 2013-14 he turned over more than half his roster...

Name Number Pos. Height Weight Year Hometown Notes

Chris Babb 2 G 6'5" 225 RS Senior Arlington, Texas Graduated

Korie Lucious 13 G 5'11" 175 RS Senior Milwaukee, Wisconsin Graduated

Will Clyburn 21 G 6'7" 205 RS Senior Detroit, Michigan Graduated

Anthony Booker 22 F 6'9" 250 RS Senior St. Louis, Missouri Graduated

Austin McBeth 12 G 6'1" 185 Senior Wayland, Iowa Graduated

Tyrus McGee 25 G 6'2" 205 Senior Stringtown, Oklahoma Graduated

Cameron Fowler 5 G 6'0" 165 Freshman Detroit, Michigan Transferred to Niagara

Kerwin Okoro 11 G 6'5" 220 Freshman Bronx, New York Transferred to Rutgers

...and yet they finished 28-8 (11-7), beat UNC in the tourney, and made the Sweet 16. While none of the guys they lost were studs, a couple were important contributors (particularly Lucious and Clyburn). He brought in two freshman and continued to develop guys like Kane, Niang, and Ejim.

The Big 12 is a very good conference and I don't see top-notch talent lining up to play in Ames. Yet Hoiberg's teams were top 3 or 4 in the conference each of the last 4 years and were part of the national picture. That tells me his schemes are adjusted to fit his talent and that he understands how to put his players in a position to be successful. That approach makes a lot of sense in the pros.

We will see...

My "excitement" is very sarcastic. I mean, I understand that Thibs and the team had issues, but Hoiberg is just very underwhelming to me.

YOU ASSHOLES DON'T DESERVE HIM

YOU [expletive] DON'T DESERVE HIM

I'm pretty basketball dumb, so I probably don't.

He's a pretty hot candidate and all I've read/watched, I've liked a lot. I'm excited about bringing in this style of play and reshaping the roster toward it.

We just need another Thibs to come in as a defensive assistant.

I've got an autographed rookie Fred Hoiberg card for some reason if one of you true Bulls fans wants to pay me a bunch of money for it

If you showed me pics of Hoiberg and Thibs and then guess which one had had a couple of heart attacks I would have guessed Thibs AND assumed he was having a heart attack at that very moment.

I can't help but remember the last time the Bulls let a fantastic coach go in order to replace him with their pet candidate from Iowa State.

From what I gather, this is a good thing.

I saw the rumors last week but I hadn't seen that he took the job.

Not to be confused with Jim Boylan.

I immediately mistook him for Boylan so that's good.

So.....

Who do you guys want to draft? I've been fixated on SGs (Justin Anderson, RJ Hunter, Rashad Vaughn, hoping teams forget Devin Booker exists), but I don't know that I should be. The Bulls could lose Butler, but I doubt that happens. But they do have Butler, Snell, McDermott all at the 2/3. Honestly a backup PG for DRose injury insurance (and keeping Hinrich on the bench) might be a good way to go. Etwaun Moore isn't very good. Also, another big in preparation for Noah's free agent year, or the inevitable Gibson injury, or the upcoming Gasol decline could be a wise pick.

Not sure either will be available but I like Grant or Hollis-Jefferson.

Yeah, Grant would be ideal. But I don't expect him to be there. Hollis-Jefferson is a beautiful athlete, but I would like more of a shooter.

They talk about that a lot on RealGM and while it's valid I think it's overblown and makes it seem like Gar just blindly picks who Lloyd says to.

Also, Lloyd made the Teague pick, I don't know why it's suggested he didn't. He stayed on to scout that draft and left the day after. It's possible Gar ignored his advice as he was out he door afterwards but Teague has to be a mark on Lloyds record.

Yeah, I didn't completely agree with it, just found it interesting. Gar does seem to take his buddies guys though. It will be interesting to see if Tyus Jones is still on the board and they take Grant still. Really would love to nab Jones at 22.
