Yeah. I think Cliff was probably self-aware enough to know he should come back for a second year. But there was no way he could do it without his parents fessing up. So now he's pretty much cornered into declaring when he's clearly not ready and likely not a first rounder.

From one of my Illini friends:

 

at some point it was announced that Austin Colbert was going to transfer from Illinois. That news was surprising in that Colbert actually got some late season playing time and looking promising. Given all the PF and C minutes available next year and the fact he's clearly ahead of Maverick Morgan most people were penciling him in for a good 20 minutes. But then poof he was gone.

 

Yesterday it was formally announced that Illinois has picked up another 5th year transfer that will be eligible this fall. That would be 6-11 270 C Mike Thorne who averaged 10 points and 7 rebounds for Charlotte last year. Thorne drew interest from over 50 Division 1 teams when he announced he was interested in transferring when Charlotte fired their coach at the end of the year. He set up visits to Illinois, Kentucky, and Kansas. He shows up on campus for his visit and then next thing you know he commits and cancels the Kentucky and Kansas visits. Thorne is a true back to the basket C who rarely strayed from the paint and took exactly 1 three point shot all season. He'll likely be the starting C for the Illini and I can only hope that Groce will install a defense that doesn't require him to switch onto the opposing teams PG at the top of the key like Egwu always did.

 

Illinois is also in the final three schools with Baylor and Oregon for 5th year transfer Dylan Ennis from Villanova. Ennis started all 36 games for a top 10 team last year and averaged 9.9 points and 3.5 assists. He's more of a combo guard than a true PG but if he chooses Illinois it would certainly improve the PG situation and reduce the dependency on the repaired ACL of Tracy Abrams.

Yogi Ferell will be back for his senior season. I'm not sure what real option he had otherwise. Indiana will return their top 8 scorers and add a 6-10 McDonald's All-American.

Ferrell was a borderline late 2nd round pick if he came out. If he waits a year.....he's a borderline late 2nd round pick, with a 1.5% chance of turning in a Trey Burke like senior year, where he's a top 3 player in the nation on a Final Four team and goes late 1st.

 

Thinking IU has to have a top 10 preseason ranking.

Cuonzo has things cooking out there. Really hope he's doing it the right way. That's two top ten players for 2015. He's also the guy that was heavily influential in recruiting the 'Baby Boilers'.
