@AaronLemingNFL: Report: #Bears are closing in on 5 year deal with OLB Pernell McPhee. Deal is expected to be worth just under $40M total.

This dude reported the Marshall to Jets trade an hour before the big guys had it

Had to look up some info on him. PFF rated him the second best 3-4 OLB in the league last year with Baltimore.

Man I wish I knew more about football players in general.

Sounds like a good start to me. Looks like he just turned 26, it's nice to sign a top defender in his prime.

Rotoworld seems to be a fan:

Bears agreed to terms with OLB Pernell McPhee on a five-year, $40 million contract.

The deal includes nearly $16 million in guarantees. McPhee played behind Terrell Suggs and Elvis Dumervil last year, but still posted 7.5 sacks, 64 quarterback pressures and 24 quarterback hits while lining up everywhere from nose tackle to defensive end. He was PFF's No. 2 3-4 OLB, behind only Justin Houston. It's an excellent get for the Bears, who now have themselves a difference-maker for a defense that was ranked 30th in both 2013 and 2014.

If we sign pot roast, maybe we can go WR in the first now?

Per @JaysonBraddock, Chicago Bears also interested in Colin Kaepernick trade. Would obviously make Jay Cutler available.

W'oh....lets not make things worse here...

Sounds like the Kaepernick rumor isn't much to worry about at the moment:

In addition to Baalke’s denial, Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com reported (via Twitter) that after reaching out to several teams in need of a quarterback, he had yet to hear from one who had talked to the Niners about Kaepernick. Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports also tweeted that San Francisco is “not shopping” Kaepernick, though he wasn’t sure if other teams had called the 49ers to inquire.

Hopefully the mobile link works on desktops, but this is a pretty optimistic article on him (albeit probably a bit fluffy).

Pretty nice article to read. Consider me pumped I guess. Also nice to see this:

As far as the dollar amount that McPhee could receive: Former NFL agent CBSSports.com's Joel Corry wrote that McPhee could receive a deal similar to the one signed by Cleveland Browns linebacker Paul Kruger two years ago (five years, $40.5 million, $20 million guaranteed). We wouldn't be surprised if the numbers were even greater than that.

I know I'm pulling a "Fred Hornkohl September Game Thread" right now but one more piece of news:

Brad Biggs @BradBiggs

#Bears have expressed interest in #Raiders free agent center Stefen Wisniewski. trib.in/1EKtRkx

The 6-foot-3, 315-pound Wisniewski was a second-round pick from Penn State in 2011. He has made 61 starts over the past four seasons, playing center for three years after lining up at left guard as a rookie. His father Leo Wisniewski was a nose tackle for the Colts for four seasons and his uncle Steve Wisniewski is one of the best linemen in Raiders history, an eight-time Pro Bowl guard.

I thinkk that would be a good get... Could play center or either guard spot, which could allow Long to kick out to RT maybe if they're satisfied with Garza/DLP (is he still with the Bears) at Center

The Bears are expected to pursue free agent C Stefen Wisniewski.

Wisniewski's departure from Oakland became official earlier today when the team signed former Chiefs center Rodney Hudson to a five-year mega-deal. The Bears already have Roberto Garza at center but the younger Wisniewski offers more long-term value. According to Rotoworld's free agent rankings, he's the fourth-best center available.

Wasn't he a Blackhawk?

Nicely done.

Nabbing McPhee, Wiz, and Knighton would be a very nice start to this offseason. Particularly if they grab Knighton, I am hoping they will go completely BPA at no. 7. Hopefully Cooper or White will be there; I'm guessing the former. But if not, I would love to see Gregory somehow fall to us. I genuinely see him as a Suggs kind of guy in the 3-4.

Also - just reading up on Kevin White. He's pigeon toed and is a heel-toe runner. Obviously not everyone is the same and he is clearly a unique athlete, but that would concern me in terms of the possibility of chronic injury.

EDIT: The more I read, the more I hope Cooper falls to us. Pairing him with Alshon in Gase's offense, with Bennett and Forte running around would be outstanding.

I'd also like to see them sign someone such as Pierre Thomas (about to be released) to take some of the load off of Forte.

McPhee and Houston seem like exactly the same player, but McPhee may be better and is younger. I don't know what position either will play in a 3-4, but both have played both DE and OLB in that scheme.

If both are at DE, that puts Ratliff at NT (which I don't like). Or if 1 is at OLB, I hope that doesn't mean the Bears don't go OLB in the 1st (and instead go Shelton or Cooper).

I hate not knowing what the hell defense I'm going to be watching next year.

Completely different skill sets and body types between Gregory and Suggs.

Michael C. Wright says Bears are front runners for Antrel Rolle of all people on twitter.

Jen Lada @JenLada

Was under impression #Bears defensive FAs would skew young young young. Now hearing 32 yo Antrel Rolle in the mix...hmmm. #NFLFreeAgency

Michael C. Wright @mikecwright

@JenLada He's one of their top targets and Bears appear 2B frontrunner for his services.

Suggs wasn't the current version of himself when he was a rookie.

Assuming the Giants let Rolle walk, here are a few teams that might be interested in the 10-year veteran:

Chicago Bears

Safeties under contract: Ryan Mundy, Brock Vereen, Anthony Walters.

Why Rolle is a fit: New Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio likes to have safeties who are versatile and interchangeable. Rolle has lost a step, but has made a career off of being able to cover the slot, tight end, middle of the field, and play close to the line of scrimmage. Starting strong safety Ryan Mundy is a former Giant, so communication on the back end would be less of a concern.
