I'm prepared to be told why I'm wrong, but that trade looks like a giant win for STL. I'd bet anything Heyward goes right back to 2012 form offensively now to go with his always-awesome defense.

@Braves The #Braves have acquired RHP Shelby Miller and RHP Tyrell Jenkins from the Cardinals in exchange for OF Jason Heyward and RHP Jordan Walden

Wow. My first reaction is that sucks. I don't want the Cardinals converting pitcher assets into position player assets.

If Heyward makes it to free agency it's not a runaway win, and this makes their SP situation even more interesting/thin. But I don't want the risk of Heyward signing with STL to be increased any further and wanted him on the Cubs in 2015, so this sucks.

Hahaha...so the Braves official twitter sends this out, and the Jeff Passan tweets that "source" tells him that there's a trade of Miller for Heyward with other pieces involved. Good scoop!

It really bothers me that Heyward will probably now hit 300/400/500 for the next 10 years and all they had to give up was a pitcher who didn't make their postseason rotation and a pitching prospect (though I'm unaware of how well-regarded Jenkins is)

Like Nick Shepkowski just said on The Score, between Martin, and this.....these last 5 minutes have just sucked.

Back to Cubs fandom reality.

Does this happen without the Tavares thing?

I'd say no. Between Bourjos, Jay, Tavares, and Grichuk they had plenty of options that I think they were comfortable with. I think giving up Jenkins hurts them a bit, but I know very little about Walden, so that may mitigate that loss some.

Now the Cardinals will obviously sign Lester to replace the lost SP depth.

I'm going to ignore how much this sucks and just pretend the Cardinals felt they needed to make this trade because of the upcoming Cubs juggernaut

Someone explain this to me from a Braves perspective that makes me feel good that the Cardinals didn't just trade a mediocre starting pitcher for good position player. Who are Walden and Jenkins?

Heyward was clearly gonna leave ATL after this year.

Cards get 1 year of control for Heyward, 2 years for Walden. Braves get 4 years of control for Miller, and 6 for Jenkins. So the Braves get players under control for a guy that was gonna bail.

GRB sentiment is that this is only a good deal if they can re-sign Heyward. Depending on how he performs this year, I tend to agree with that. Jenkins numbers aren't spectacular, but he's been really young for every league he's played in and held his own.

Not sure about Jenkins but Walden made the AS Team for the Angels in 2011 and has been a solid if unspectacular middle reliever for awhile.
