I live just north of Tampa it's funny how pissy Rays fans are being over this. Most people I talk to bring up tampering right away. I think they are going to be pretty disappointed if they think Cubs will be found guilty. I really want to get a Cubs Maddon Jersy this weekend just to poke the angry bears.

In a very short period they lost Price, Friedman, and Maddon. Not to mention their park is a [expletive] hole. Gotta be a tough time to be a Rays fan after the last few years success.

Yup that stadium is terrible, the only time I've been there was when the cubs played there a few years ago haven't been back. It's like a giant Highschool gymnasium, a terrible place to watch baseball. They could draw fans but not in that dump.

not only that but isn't the location really inconvenient for people who live in Tampa (the larger part of the metro population)? Something like only 1 bridge from Tampa to St. Pete.

At the same time, these are all excuses...a 90+ win team with likable players should be able to draw decently.

so they specifically discuss Maddon but don't announce his hiring?

yeah really weird. you have to think if they are really still negotiating, announcing Ricky's firing really kills their leverage.

Come on. You really think they're firing Renteria if they don't have Maddon locked down? That's ridiculous.

No I don't think that, that's why I think its weird that the moves (firing Ricky, hiring Maddon) weren't announced at the same time.

"Jesus, Tom; I was just speculatin' about a hypothesis!"

Stadiums being in horrible locations is a cliche across sports. Florida is just terrible and doesn't give a [expletive] about sports besides stupid college football and sometimes the Dolphins. Edited by Sammy Sofa

Agreed. If a team is good then their fans should show. Shea Stadium was a repulsive monstrosity that no human should have had to endure (old Yankee Stadium wasn't much better), but when those teams won they drew huge.

Of course NYC has 20 million people in its metro area (albeit split between 2 teams) and Tampa has 2.7 (and half are probably transplants that support another team)

I think the cliche is accurate in certain situations, especially in sports that require fans to show up multiple times during the week. But in the case of Florida, there is no convenient location for everything. Anything you want to get to is an hour away from wherever you are.

Well most of the people who live here are not from here, they are transplants from northern cities. Snowbirds and retired folks. They bring their own fanships with them and I don't think they ever feel the same way about the teams here as the teams from where they are from. That gets overlooked a lot. I love baseball, but I don't give 2 hoots about the Rays.

How many former Rays managers are we going to hire?

I think they now have a direct tie to every Rays manager (assuming Maddon doesn't fall through).

Maddon, Piniella, McRae and Rothschild

Yet, even if baseball could prove that tampering occurred, what type of penalty would be appropriate? This is where it gets interesting. The Rays could claim that the Cubs’ actions caused Maddon to opt out — and demand a player as compensation. A good player, too, considering that the Cubs value Maddon enough to give him what is certain to be a monster contract. Think Javier Baez. Or Addison Russell.

I was pretty surprised and impressed by how honest that statement was.

Same here.

And goodness Rosenthal, you couldn't have swung and missed any harder if you tried.

I've heard a lot of absurd things this year, and even outside the topic of baseball, this is the most absurd.

Managers still don't matter that much, but every time Epstein does something like this (annoy the rest of baseball while paying top dollar to make sure the Cubs get the best of something), I get a little glimmer that maybe the version of him that was active in Boston could show up permanently.

if i see ken rosenthal on the street imma punch him right in the bowtie

I saw him last week, hes so small you'd kill him. Then we wouldn't get the ms paint for this. Please don't do it.

All #Rays coaches are under contract, none expected to join Maddon in Chicago. Tho If Dave Martinez didn't get #Rays manager job, he could.

Just give them Chris Carpenter.
