You should try being outpatient, it's a lot cheaper.

Cubs and Joe Maddon continue to make progress on a deal, sources say. Agreement not official yet but moving in that direction. @FOXSports

Ok that's a Brian Roberts update.

Interesting quite from Maddon about Javy Baez, mentioned by CCO:

“I wouldn’t tell him anything. You can only make them think, which is the worst thing you can possibly do today. If he can turn his mind off and just go play, that’d be the best thing. I’d tell him to go up there and be himself and play to his strengths. Don’t worry about all of the data, video and that kind of stuff. It’s not gonna help him.”

With the caveat that I am not Joe Maddon's biographer, the only thing I could find was this, in which Maddon makes the case that Jeremy Hellickson (2012) should stick with his FB-CH-CB combo rather than trying to incorporate a cutter.

The problem is when a young pitcher who's had a lot of success tries to introduce a new pitch into the mix, then he's possibly taking away from something else that he does really well. You only get so many opportunities to throw a pitch in a game. I don't mind the idea that he's messing with something that might be good for him down the road. But most of the time the hitters are going to tell you when you need to become more creative.

Also, Kap and Haugh.

It looks like Maddon isn't a huge fan of young pitchers adding a cutter at the MLB level. Or at least 2+ years ago he wasn't in the particular case of Jeremy Hellickson.

“You only pick up a pitch like that (cutter) if the other parts of the package aren’t working or if you need something else, otherwise I prefer you pitch with what you have. Normally, it’s later in your career.”

Last year Price, Moore, and Smyly(along with several relievers) all made extensive use of a cutter. Both Price and Smyly threw it more with the Rays than with the Tigers.

Levine said yesterday that they'd even spoken face to face iirc.
