So I caught about 30 seconds of Kap & Haugh and they're talking about how Maddon doesn't like the cutter. Is this true and how much should I care?

Like Kap even knows what a cutter is

It looks like Maddon isn't a huge fan of young pitchers adding a cutter at the MLB level. Or at least 2+ years ago he wasn't in the particular case of Jeremy Hellickson.

“You only pick up a pitch like that (cutter) if the other parts of the package aren’t working or if you need something else, otherwise I prefer you pitch with what you have. Normally, it’s later in your career.”

Last year Price, Moore, and Smyly(along with several relievers) all made extensive use of a cutter. Both Price and Smyly threw it more with the Rays than with the Tigers.

I was going to say Price for sure threw it a bunch. Before he got traded, I think I saw him K 9 Pirates using primarily his cutter to RH hitters. Nice to have some facts with it. Not that I can imagine he'd interfere with the pitching coach (assuming its still Bosio) with the guys already throwing it (Arrieta).

It seems like he doesn't want guys who are doing just fine with their regular stuff adding a cutter, but that wouldn't stop him from having a pitching coach introduce a cutter to a guy who has been less effective without it.

Yeah. Maddon could probably say he wants half his staff to learn to throw with their left hands so the staff is perfectly balanced, and I'd probably buy it. I'm all in on Maddon.

I remain very skeptical about Maddon and his ability to make much of a difference on the field. I fear this has as much to do with providing a cost effective PR boost as making the team better. A 5/25 contract for a manager seems to have a lot of people falling head over heals while a 5/25 pitcher isn't going to create any excitement.

They have a dwindling season ticket list and need to renegotiate TV rights. It used to be the Cubs would do something to boost excitement right around the time of the convention to carry over into spring training and single game ticket sales. They've more or less abandoned that process the past few years and now you have something that is being perceived as the most exciting thing to happen to the Cubs since Theo was hired, so it appears to be working.

I really don't see Maddon making a huge difference in the win/loss column, but as long as he isn't the featured offseason acquisition he appears to be now, I'm moderately happy about it.

I definitely don't find myself as in love as the rest of the board seems. If it fell through I won't be heartbroken at all.

I'd be really concerned about where this leaves Renteria, especially in the eyes of the players.

Well that's definitely true at this point. I guess if it had fallen apart like 3 days ago I wouldn't have cared though.

Funnily enough, Chris Denofria - who's been mentioned as a potential Cubs target this offseason (I'll pass) just tweeted that Maddon was about to become the Cubs' manager.

Meh, they will get over it. Theo would explain that they love Ricky, but they had a chance to get one of the highest regarded managers in baseball and went for it.

They might have to put their money where their mouth is and extend Ricky for an extra year or two though.

Then I'll guess that you're not responsible for this:

Christopher Anthony Denorfia (born July 15, 1980) is an American professional baseball player who is currently a free agent, and better than reigning World Series MVP Madison Bumgarner.

Which begs the the question: how is this in any way news about Chris Denofria?

Oh please! It's a business. Are you really concerned about Edwin Jackson's feelings? Wonder how Castillo will deal with such trauma? A number of the up and coming younger players wouldn't know Ricky from Len Kasper. They just want a chance to play and prove themselves. If I'm a free agent, Maddon has a resume.

You aren't real good at remembering what you wrote. But you do back peddle good. Starting now.

The discussion you quoted was in regards to if the Maddon hiring fell through.

This has nothing to do with people's feelings.

Editing your mistakes won't help you. You remain confused and fell down in the process. Laughable.
