Yeah the shootout sucks, might as well play beer pong or checkers to decide the "winner point". Or just leave as a damn tie like it used to :banghead:

Hawks now have points in 7 straight games. I know they are 2-0-3 on homestand, but if they get wins in their next three they get 13 of 16 points, where everyone was expecting them to be on this home stand.

THIS

There is no freaking reason to have loser's points. You play for 65 minutes and its still tied, you take your point and move onto the next one. No need to add a skills competition to force a winner.

I wonder how many times a playoff spot was decided by a team with more shootout wins. I'm sure its not a ton but it's probably happened.

While that is all true, I do have to admit a love of watching Kane make goalies look stupid.

Off the top of my head 2010 Flyers, got in because they won the shootout in the last regular season game. Of course we all know they made it all the way to the Cup Final only to lose to the Hawks

My favorite part of the shoot out remains seeing people freak because the shoot out exists.

It would be like if baseball went to a homerun derby if the game was tied after 9 innings, or basketball went to a free throw contest.

It's only there to "declare a winner" and a "loser"

This.

My attitude is, we get through regulation, great, we got a point. It's basically a tie. If we win the SO, even better. But I don't get upset if we lose the SO.

What about a regulation/OT win counts as 3, a SO win is 2, and an OT/SO loss is 1? Overtime would be even more bananas than it is right now.

I thought it would be like playing beer pong?

If baseball awarded points for wins and ties vs no points for regulation losses (an unnecessarily convoluted concept that provides no more worth than simple w/l record) then perhaps that would be an issue.

This is true, but I was more referring to a playoff team that wouldn't be in the playoffs if the loser's point didn't exist.

Here's an example: Here is the bottom of the West playoff bracket currently:

WC1: Winnipeg 30-19-10 70 points

Pacific 2: Calgary 32-22-4 68 points

Pacific 3: Vancouver 32-21-3 67 points

WC2: Los Angeles 27-28-23 66 points

OUT: San Jose 29-22-8 66 points

Here is how the standings would look if at the end of OT both teams got a point:

Pacific 2: Vancouver 30-23-3 63 points

Pacific 3: Calgary 29-25-4 62 points

WC1: San Jose 27-25-7 61 points

WC2: Los Angeles 26-23-8 60 points

OUT: Winnipeg 24-25-10 58 points

So Winnipeg goes from 4 points up on a playoff spot to 2 points behind

San Jose goes from out of the playoffs to the first WC spot

Vancouver and Calgary switch places

The concept that the shootout somehow ruins hockey is the true loser point.

No ones saying it ruins hockey just that it's stupid and we (I) don't like it

I'd like it better if it didn't offer a bonus point to the game, and every game were worth 3 points, but it's increased interest in regular season games a bunch since implementation.

I think 3 big market teams becoming elite (Chicago, Boston, LA), plus knocking a half hr off game times has done more to increase interest than shoot outs.

My biggest fear with the SO is that teams are going to start having SO specialists on their rosters like they used to have enforcers. Not sure why that will bother me, it will though.

I'm skeptical that people are watching regular season hockey because of shootouts.

That is not anybody's claim.

shootouts are great for the regular season

Don't [expletive] go with this strawman because you have a meatbally inclination towards game "purity".

Ties suck ass and watching my favorite dudes wear themselves out in double OT is unbearable.

Now you know that.
