In talking to several sources, no decision yet from Jon Lester. Could come soon but there’s no timetable, either. #redsox #cubs #giants

Well that contradicts everything we've been led to believe doesn't it.

So now a guy tweets from Chicago that he heard the Yankees gave Lester a "can't refuse" offer, nobody in NY has mentioned a thing about it, the Yankees never met with Lester, and all of a sudden there's instant teeth gnashing about it?

Yeah, I'm not going to sweat this at all until I hear some corroboration.

I agree nothing to worry about yet, but there has been talk of a mystery team for over a week now so it's possible that team is the Yankees

I know execs like to game, but I almost believe the Yankees when they said they wouldn't be in on big free agents this offseason. I think that old Yankees business model doesn't work, hasn't been working for them the past couple years, and they know it.

The Yankees farm system is improving after spending a ton of money on it lately. They just don't see the need to sit back and do nothing while they wait for it.

They did finish just five games out last year of the playoffs, and Fangraphs projects them five games ahead of the Cubs.

Worked pretty [expletive] well for like what 4 WSs?

2009 was really the only WS they won under the "buy all the FAs" strategy. Their successes in the late 90's were largely from a home grown operation.

Last second (stupid) tactic for encouraging more offers. Use doops in the press to send the message.

Twitter is now the tool of the agents to get their clients more money.

True, but 2009 wasn't the only year they were in the WS or really damn close under the buy buy buy strategy, and considering that's a lot further then our Cubs have mustered, I'd take it

They still acquired a [expletive] of players from other teams:

O' Neill

Martinez

Brosius

Knoblauch

Boggs

Curtis

Justice

Raines

Strawberry

Cone

El Duque

Wells

Clemens

Stanton

Nelson

Irabu

Gooden

Rogers

Key

These guys accounted for ~half of their fWAR from '96-'00

Homegrown talent accounted for ~half of their fWAR '09

FWIW, Kaplan says his source tells him Yankees have not made offer to Lester. Usual pound of salt disclaimer.

Heyman concurs. Says if NYY chases one of the big dogs it'll be Max.

Obviously all of these guys are wrong very often, but I don't see Kaplan as a grain (or pound) of salt guy.

And so the Jon Lester thread arrived at its logical conclusion, wherein David Kaplan was compared to Lot's wife... Edited by MWV

40 pages...

I assumed we heard something new on the Lester sweepstakes. But, alas and as usual, it's just a bunch of lurkers jamming up the thread with posts about a whole lot of nothing.

Carry on.
