Hot damn, you can get tickets to Reds games for $6! so long, suckers!

I went in '03. Paid $6 for nose bleed seat. the stadium was empty and I secured seats about 15 rows behind 3rd base by the 3rd inning.

I went in 03 also. The Estes game...but I remember the stadium being pretty packed.

I only live a couple hours away. I went for the division clincher in 07, but we actually clinched when the Brewers lost an hour after the game, so it wasn't all that exciting.

I was also at that game (was at Ball State and bought the ticket on a whim). I think the Brewers were losing pretty big by the time the game ended, so most of the Cubs fans there (and that was probably close to half the fans in the park) knew what was up. I remember a pretty large group of them singing "Go Cubs Go" on the way out.

Unlikely as it may be, I'm rooting hard for a Bryant call up for Sept. It'd really just complete this season nicely.

It's not even unlikely. It's 100% not happening.

They don't explicitly say things too often but they pretty much have explicitly said that.

And I still don't understand it.

ETA: compared to Baez/Soler that is

It seems pretty clear that the thinking is that being a Boras client, Bryant is extremely unlikely to sign an early extension, and as such, extracting every bit of team control possible is the prudent thing to do. Soler is on a guaranteed major league contract anyway, so there's no reason to keep him down (unless I am mistaken).

you don't understand why Soler would be called up before Bryant?

I don't understand why they're seemingly playing service time games with Bryant but not Baez and Soler.

i still expect Bryant makes the team out of ST

out of curiosity what is the long term difference between him coming up now, and him making the opening day roster?

That mostly and maybe to some extent they mean it when they say they want him to have a full season in the minors before he gets called up.

Bryant's a Boras client and won't sign an early extension. Baez isn't a Boras client, and Soler's already on an MLB contract.

Not a lot, which is why I don't think he'll make the opening day roster.

Playing games with Bryant makes sense to me. I don't quite get the Baez one, but with Soler it's not the same game.

I know less than some others here but I believe the service-time impact is essentially nil between those two scenarios.

Again, while Soler is on a major league contract, he can opt into arbitration as soon as he's eligible. There has been no indication that he is not beholden to the standard 6 years of big league service requirement.

Correct. Bryant would need to be held down until mid-April to get the "7th" year of control

He's signed through those six years already, though. The last year of his contract is 2020, which would also be his last pre-FA year if he is indeed beholden to the standard service-time requirement.

...unless he was held down til mid-April of next year making his last pre-FA year 2021.

[expletive]' Ricketts is making him ride the rails like a hobo.

lol

truth be told i can see how (if it really was that last minute because who knows why) between getting him on a flight almost cross country and all the excitement last night he probably wouldn't have gotten much rest by today's game.

They must value Baez getting his adjustment period out of the way over service time.

I'm not sure about the service time issue, but you'd actually want him to go to arbitration earlier since he goes from making $3mm in 2017 to $4mm in 2018 and arbitration is based on previous year's salary. It's a small amount, but every little bit counts for PTR.

Any word on whether the Cubs are going to activate Soler before the game? Still holding out hope for an 9th inning game winning homer

Arbitration isn't based on previous years salaries it's based on comparables. Travis Wood received a bigger increase than David Price did in their respective 1st year of arb. The fact that Wood was coming from 520k and Price was coming from 1.25M was irrelevant

ETA previous years salary comes into play in that you can't reduce a salary by any more than 20% his previous salary

with his hammy issues, I see no reason to rush him into game action after likely flying in midday today.

I remember me and my friends wanted to stay until the Brewers game was over (and a lot of other Cub fans seemed to have the same idea) but they shut off the scoreboard and started shutting off all the lights. Bitter jerks.

Unlikely but not impossible. Carlos Gonzalez signed 7/80 after only his third year in the league, one in which he put up .336/.376/.598/.974 and finished third in the MVP voting.
