Marlins designated RHP Jacob Turner for assignment.

Turner had a 3.74 ERA over 20 starts with the Marlins last season, but he has regressed in a big way this year by posting a 5.97 ERA in 12 starts and eight relief appearances. It's quite a fall from grace for the 23-year-old, who was once considered a top prospect during his days as a Tigers farmhand and was a key piece in the Anibal Sanchez deal. Surely someone will take a chance on him, but his career has been a disappointment thus far.

Didn't see another thread this would fit into. Not to pull a WSR, but I would love, love, love to take a flier on this guy and see if Bosio can't work his magic.

WE COULD'VE GOTTEN SO MUCH MORE FOR GARZA IF WE HAD JUST TRADED HIM RIGHT AWAY

(obviously I realize that this doesn't mean we couldn't have, but this was easily the biggest name rumored as a return and if kyle gets to use hindsight to change his mind on the rangers return, we can use hindsight on this non-trade too)

@jazayerli: The Marlins DFA'ed Jacob Turner? Sure his ERA is 5.97, but his FIP is 4.01, xFIP is 3.93, he's 23 years old, his FB is ticking up. Strange.

@jazayerli: I mean, Jacob Turner is pretty much the picture-perfect definition of a Cubs Pitching Reclamation/xFIP Regression Special.

Same. I know he's been bad this year, but the dude is still only 23 years old. He was victim of Detroit and Miami's awful farm system management, IMO. Only thing about him is he's always had questions about the durability of his shoulder. But if he costs next to nothing I don't see why not take the risk on someone with his pedigree and youth.

Saw him a few times when he was in Detroit's system. Was never a fan. I can understand projections, but I don't think he has much of a chance of reaching them. Sadly, I think he is who he is.

Yeah, I guess "middling" and "really good" could mean the same thing. Damn subjective terms.

But I know you're going to use the "all told" qualifier to duck this, so do you.

Turner is really interesting to me. Only 23, under team control for 4 more years, very good pedigree, already throws a cutter, strike thrower, and this year's FIP is basically league average so there's a lot of reason to think he's useful in some capacity. On the other hand, Turner's problem has always been with same handed hitters, so cutter magic may only go so far. My memory and a quick search shows that he's had a changeup and curve that were pretty well regarded, it makes you wonder why he hasn't thrown more of them at the MLB level.

In any case, there's very little reason not to see if they can straighten him out a little bit, even if he can pitch to his current FIP he's a useful guy at the end of the rotation. We're starting to get a little full of that archetype between Hendricks, Wada, Straily, and Doubront(not to mention Wood and Jackson pitching like 5 starters), but the more names we can get in that pile, the better odds of getting a nice surprise from the group.

I'm going to use the "understanding context" card.

Matt Garza's return was middling in the context of what we should have gotten for him if he had been traded before getting hurt and losing a year and a half of control.

It was really good for what he was worth by the time we got around to trading him.

I never thought I'd say this, but I'd love to see the Cubs grab him. It's just 15 IP, but he's posted some interesting numbers as a reliever, with a 19.7 K% and 4.2 BB%. So even if Bosio can't work some magic and make him a valuable member of the rotation, he could be a pretty effective reliever.

blah blah blah i'm kyle and i suck

the return was really good in any context, especially at the time. cj was absolutely dominating the minors and on top of him they got two relievers who throw in the mid 90s.

i mean, hell, the only real knocks on cj (besides pedigree, i suppose) were primarily dogmatic concerns about him being too skinny. i'm sure if he had an extra 30 lbs of fat on him, a lot less would be said about it..and i'm not sure that 30 lbs of fat would make him any more durable.

obviously, since then he's had an arm issue, but we're talking about at the time and how hindsight didn't change your mind.

as an aside, is there any substantiated/empirical support of the belief that being skinny = durability concerns for pitchers?

Would it be okay to go maybe this one thread without rehashing the wisdom of the past 3 years of transactions the Cubs have made/not made?

Since you asked, I'll acquiesce.

But I'd still like a skinny = not durable mythbuster

Looks like he's out of options, do you throw him in the pen and tell Blake Parker to go back to Iowa again, or do you push Wada to the pen and tell Blake Parker to go back to Iowa again?

Man, I'd easily trade for Turner. I'd give them an actual prospect with a chance. A Marco Hernandez type or a Daury Torrez type if I had to. Turner would be the 2nd most talented arm (starter wise) in the organization above AA.

Jaxon to DL with strained pride would be ideal. Maybe Villanueva can be sent away in a waiver deal?

Is there any website that tells you how many more options a player has?

Arizona Phil's stuff on Cub Reporter is really good for Cubs org guys, but I don't know if there's a more MLB-wide resource.

Can Justin Grimm get sent back to the minors?

EDIT: Eh, he's okay on this team at the moment I suppose. Yeah, send Parker back. Sorry Blake.

Personally, I put Villanueva through waivers (if we haven't already,) get what we can for him. Turner is perfect Bosio fodder.
