So Cease pretty much needs TJS immediately, right? Am I thinking of the right guy?

Yes and Yes.

$1.5m from Schwarber

+

$100k from 3rd round guy

+

Probably a few 100k from Stinnett

+

Overage amount

+

Savings from other top 10 round seniors

That should be enough for Sands/Steele/Cease and then some, right? Which additional guys can we realistically expect?

very good that he signed for so far under slot. now let's all just pray he's not a 1b/dh.

Heard his IU coach on The Score this morning who said people who haven't seen him catch are surprised how well he moves behind the plate. If he can stay there, stay healthy..wonderful. If he has to move to a corner OF spot, then so be it. His attitude seems to be good and will do whatever the team tells him. The coach said he can absolutely hit and a LH power hitter is rare.

What do I win for picking the under on the $3.3M number davell (?) threw out there?

Okay, so I didn't come out and say it. But I did figure they had a pre-draft deal in place that was very attractive.

Heh, I was WAY wrong and WAY over on this one. I was guessing $3.8 and wouldn't have been surprised at $4.0. Wrong, wrong, wrong!

Hopefully. We may be sleeping on what it costs to land Cease. If he can be had for a mill, we're going to have some extra money to spend outside the top 10.

I'm wanting one of Cantu or Adams and Deppermann. Others may want Peters or Gilliam. But hopefully this allows for 2 of those type signings.

Ick. That just means that like half a dozen teams could have said "don't agree to that with the Cubs, we'll offer you more if you fall to us" and didn't.

We traded back. Something you advocated in this draft. Paying Schwarber MORE makes you happy?

That's true enough. Kind of. Even by the Mets at 10, though, they'd have needed to pretty much commit all their 5% money to go overslot enough to beat that contract. Would have been tough even by pick 10 to go there. 7-8-9 all took pitchers. Any of them could have gotten past $3.125 if they wanted the guy enough, but if you're in a different place regarding TINSNIP or whatever the acronym actually is, easy to see why they wouldn't have done that. AGain, obviously if they thought he'd be Babe Ruth or Bryant, they'd have happily extended themselves beyond $3.125.

But, I don't think it's really that surprising that other teams wouldn't have evaluated Schwarber as highly as McLeod did relative to the alternatives. A lot of teams like pitchers, a lot of teams like speed/defense tools, a lot of teams like up-the-middle tools, a lot of teams go for high-ceiling/upside. Personally I'm good with the avoidance of pitcher risk, and I'm good with prioritizing the rare power+bat tool combination.

But yeah, it's all about scouting. If Cubs scouting is bad, and he ends up hitting like Mike Olt and playing LF like Brooks Kieschnick, it will go down as a very dumb pick.

I assume he means TINSTAAPP (there is no such thing as a pitching prospect).

I know...I'm trying to figure out what TINSNIP would be though.

Paying Schwarber more would have meant that all the pundits were dumb and the real decision-makers thought Schwarber was awesome and there was no need to "trade back."

The real decision makers look dumb with like 75% of first round picks. The worst possible interpretation is that they intentionally took a slightly lesser talent to be able to spread money out to the rest of the rounds. Given the depth of the draft class and the lack of premium talent at 4 it's a positive decision even in that light. Add in that consensus might be wrong about Schwarber and it's a downright good idea.

None of which means I can't be disappointed that "everyone" wasn't wrong about what was happening and Schwarber would actually demand near-full-slot.

Law had Cease as a top 10 overall talent prior to his injury. I kind of look at it as trading the 4th pick for 15 and 16, or something similar.

If Schwarber had demanded full slot, there's little doubt in my mind we would have went with Conforto or whoever else would have allowed us to trade back essentially.
