Peavy to the Giants

This should be good for my fantasy team (even though we use QS and not W)

Speaking of fantasy, imagine Baumgartner, Peavy, Cain, Lincecum, and Hudson all in their respective prime and in a single rotation.

Even as they win, they'll continue to build the farm. They'll continue building depth with low risk acquisitions such as Luis Valbuena, Scott Feldman, Adrian Cardenas, Mike Olt, Ian Stewart, Jake Arrieta, Scott Baker, Arodys Vizcaino, Ryan Kalish, Lars Anderson, and Chris Coghlan with champaign hopes but box wine expectations, as opposed to filling the same spots with proven mediocrity.

That sounds horrible. Thank goodness they won't really do that.

If they were relying on them, yes. But as depth, then would rather have youngish, one time well regarded prospects or random AAAA rank and file?

That *is* what the AAAA rank and file is, for everyone.

Picking up some crappy players who were once thought to be promising isn't some magic loophole they've discovered. It's what every team does in AAA, and we've been doing it in the majors with pretty much no results in position players. And once we're good again, we'll stop doing it in the majors and be like everyone else.

Escobar and Hembree for Peavy. I gotta admit, I thought the Red Sox would do a bit better than that for him.

Really? I think that's a steal. Jake Peavy is utter garbage.

I think Peavy will be pretty solid in that park. But I'm not high on Escobar at all. Hembree is a set up guy type......It's not horrible and the Giants don't have much of a system to begin with....Guess I'd have thought the Red Sox could have gotten another semi-solid(which is all Escobar and Hembree are) piece to go with them.

Wow Chris Young is 90th and his baseball card stats are solid.

Can someone explain FIP to an old man? I know nothing about it

Basically, it takes HRs, BBs and Ks and converts them into something that looks like ERA. It's actually better at predicting ERA than actual ERA is, so the assumption is that it represents a "luck and defense removed" ERA.

So what is considered bad/mediocre/average/above average/excellent FIP if you had to give a range? I'm lost on a lot of the newer stats.

*** edit

It's just an adjusted era it looks like, so it can be looked at a lot like era I guess

Same as ERA, that's one of the selling points.

There's also xFIP, which is basically the same thing, but instead of using HR the pitcher has allowed, it uses how many HR the pitcher should have allowed.

This estimate is calculated by taking the league-average home run to fly ball rate (~9-10% depending on the year) and multiplying it by a pitcher’s fly ball rate.

Well FIP makes Edwin Jackson look slightly less bad, Arrieta's FIP almost the same as his era, it's an interesting stat to compare to era.

Yeah, but Jaxon is just an outlier who really sucks as bad as he looks.
