◆ Cubs fans never warmed to Matt Garza, who did little to dispel the notion that he was both fragile and a goof, so there wasn’t much outrage when he was swapped to Texas last year for Justin Grimm and prospects. Jeff Samardzija, by contrast, is beloved here, but the Cubs will be fortunate to get as much for him. Garza, like Samardzija, was 29 when he was dealt, and a more accomplished big-league pitcher with 63 wins, 1,098 innings and five postseason starts. Samardzija has 31 big-league wins and one postseason inning.

He makes a great point. Why hasn't Shark led us to the postseason more?

I'm trying to lower my expectations just a tad, so what do you guys think of these proposed trades from the Orioles or Jays

Daniel Norris, Dalton Pompey, Alberto Tirado from the Jays

Hunter Harvey, Chance Sisco, Jon Keller -or- Zach Davies from the Orioles?

Did we know this?

The Cubs may come to regret not locking up staff ace Jeff Samardzija when they had the chance to do so at a lower price, writes Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun Times. Wittenmyer reports that, earlier in the year, Samardzija had proposed a $100MM deal while the Cubs were sitting at $60MM. Samardzija’s representatives signaled that they would split the difference, but Chicago only increased its offer by $500K. Now, with the asking price much higher, it seems as though the 29-year-old will instead be dealt, and Wittenmyer argues that the club will struggle to replace him for anything approaching a reasonable price.

I find it hard to believe that he countered with 80M and they countered with 60.5M. If that's at all true, I would have to assume that it was 500k annually (still shitty) and that that is very poorly worded.

Extremely poorly worded.

At this point if we are at an absolute impasse with him on a new deal, I'd absolutely do a deal where Hunter Harvey is really the only significant piece from Baltimore. I really hope we could figure out a way to get Bundy though him+Harvey in a deal probably isn't happening.

I wouldn't. Contrary to apparently growing belief, no one says the Cubs HAVE to trade Samardzija. I'd rather keep him at below-market value for next year than ship him out for a lottery ticket and scraps.

If they finish bottom 10, I can definitely see them giving up their 2nd, even their 3rd, with the money we have coming off the books. Based on how our youngsters look the rest of this year.

I believe he's saying that, if we call up Bryant and keep Samardzija, we're at decent risk of not finishing bottom ten.

Ah, misunderstood. But I think Alcantara is the only good prospect we've got that sees the majors this year. Outside of him, all I think we see is Hendricks, Wada, Vizcaino in September and maybe Rivero.

I don't think the pick is going to matter a whole lot. There aren't any outfielders that would require being overly worried about getting a QO(Melky and maybe Markakis at the most), and the pitchers that are getting a QO are not the players the FO is going to want, for good reason.

As for a Shark deal, a concession looks like a deal where Stroman/Duffy/Walker/Bundy/Gausman is the best and most MLB-ready piece you get. If Harvey/Rodriguez/Zimmer/Norris are the best players you get in a deal, you keep Shark and let him see 2015 in person.

I don't disagree that the FO won't pursue them, but what's the "good reason" to not pursue Lester or Scherzer?

5 year, 9 figure contacts(or near 9 figures in Lester's case) to 30+ pitchers are recipes for sorrow, both in the $/WAR sense and in the Mike Hampton sense. Even moreso in the Cubs case, where Scherzer would take a huge percentage of the payroll and where the FO + Bosio is becoming a pretty reliable path to a solid rotation without huge spending anyway.

It's difficult to reliably say what the best course is until we see what happens with Shark and Hammel, but especially with Arrieta staking a claim to a rotation spot, my guess is that if they need/want to make a SP splash it'll be with Maeda, otherwise they'd be better served getting next year's Hammel and using the money towards the OF(that Cuban CF, Matt Kemp, Markakis, etc)

Yeah, I know it's foolish to keep expecting it, but seeing what Bosio and the FO have done with SP makes it so hard for me to want to bite the bullet on paying massive money to a pitcher, especially an older one.

Mind you, I'm not saying I don't think they should.
