Anyone see Kluwe's article in deadspin? I'm convinced he's been black balled. Makes me not want anything to do with Frazier.

I don't know. I think he writes a pretty compelling case, and the things that were said to him by his coaches is disturbing and unacceptable, but in terms of linking what was said/done to him and his release from the Vikings, there are 2 sides to every story. I have a hard time believing that in a results driven league, teams would actually choose to burn a 5th round pick and release an adequately performing punter because he outwardly supports gay marriage.

Either way, he's certainly blackballed now.

our punter was pretty much decapitated, surely he had a place on the bengals roster if he wasn't blackballed.

valid point. I know the Bears brought him in for a tryout somewhere in October/November. Did the Bengals even bring him in. Maybe he was blackballed, but I'm still somewhat dubious that his campaigning for marriage equality was the main reason he was cut. I edited my previous post to add that in a results driven league, it seems illogical to burn a 5th round pick and cut their adequately performing punter because he was outspoken about marriage equality.

yeah, why wouldn't any team want to sign a pro-bowl punter?

Thank you everyone for the well wishes and support, but sadly, did not get the Bengals job. Punted well, but apparently not well enough.

Really? Because when he first started talking on the subject one of the main talking points was that he was going to get himself blackballed. Why would you find this to be unlikely? I'm not saying I buy it completely, but it's as likely as any other story. NFL teams aren't all about results, they harp on things like distractions all the time.

Also, logic isn't always applied, so to suggest they wouldn't do something because it's illogical doesn't really work.

I don't think Kluwe was blackballed from Minnesota for his activism (the new Vikings' punter posted almost as good a net average as Kluwe did in '12, for far less money, on a team that went nowhere anyway), but man, that Priefer has some major issues. What a nutjob.

Explain Kerry Rhodes not being employed by any team last year. The Bears sure could have used him instead of Chris Conte.

he can't be worse than patrick chung, starting safety on the eagles, whose singular talent seems to be injuring his teammates.

Yeah, I think he has a much better case than Kluwe. Given how concerned NFL teams get with "distractions" in general, I could see a team not seeing a real benefit to keeping a punter (who are generally easily replaceable) who appears to be pretty vocal on controversial issues in general (according to that article, he made comments about the Pope too), as opposed to releasing him due to his stance on a specific issue.

Blackballed or whatever you want to call it, I'm sure he got cut and wouldn't be signed by another team because of his vocal support for gay rights. Whether they're homophobic or just don't want to deal with the distraction for something as easily (and cheaply) replaceable as a veteran punter, I don't know, probably varies by team. But he surely ended his career today.

Wow, I'd never heard that story before. That looks awful

"Activism?" Being a decent [expletive] human being is "activism" in your book?

Oh, right; it's Andry and these are the gays.

Pretty much; anyone thinking that this isn't a huge deal to avoid for the backwards-ass sports world (especially the NFL) is just deluding themselves. Even I knew there was less than a zero chance of him admitting it, I wanted the Rogers rumors to be true so bad; the best [expletive] QB around being gay would be pretty awesome.

Throughout the months of September, October, and November, Minnesota Vikings special-teams coordinator Mike Priefer would use homophobic language in my presence. He had not done so during minicamps or fall camp that year, nor had he done so during the 2011 season. He would ask me if I had written any letters defending "the gays" recently and denounce as disgusting the idea that two men would kiss, and he would constantly belittle or demean any idea of acceptance or tolerance. I tried to laugh these off while also responding with the notion that perhaps they were human beings who deserved to be treated as human beings. Mike Priefer also said on multiple occasions that I would wind up burning in hell with the gays, and that the only truth was Jesus Christ and the Bible. He said all this in a semi-joking tone, and I responded in kind, as I felt a yelling match with my coach over human rights would greatly diminish my chances of remaining employed. I felt uncomfortable each time Mike Priefer said these things. After all, he was directly responsible for reviewing my job performance, but I hoped that after the vote concluded in Minnesota his behavior would taper off and eventually stop.

Near the end of November, several teammates and I were walking into a specialist meeting with Coach Priefer. We were laughing over one of the recent articles I had written supporting same-sex marriage rights, and one of my teammates made a joking remark about me leading the Pride parade. As we sat down in our chairs, Mike Priefer, in one of the meanest voices I can ever recall hearing, said: "We should round up all the gays, send them to an island, and then nuke it until it glows." The room grew intensely quiet, and none of the players said a word for the rest of the meeting. The atmosphere was decidedly tense. I had never had an interaction that hostile with any of my teammates on this issue—some didn't agree with me, but our conversations were always civil and respectful. Afterward, several told me that what Mike Priefer had said was "messed up."

Kluwe [expletive] rules. Between the Incognito garbage and this and Kerry Rhodes and Riley Cooper the NFL has been doing a bang-up job of seeming like it's populated by brain-dead animal-men even more so than usual, which is oddly/depressingly impressive.

I'd admire your perverse quest to twist anything I say even remotely related to this topic into hate speech if your cyber-stalking didn't seriously creep me the [expletive] out.

Yes, what he was doing was activism. He was actively going out and promoting the idea of marriage equality as a fairly visible member of an NFL team. What you and I might do in being supportive of gay marriage laws being passed would be being a decent human being.

He's just on the public stage by default; he was barely doing anything that could be called activism outside of writing some articles and answering questions in interviews.

Considering his line of work and what it appears to have cost him, I'd say it was activism. He was also on quite a few radio shows campaigning for the repeal of the ban on gay marriage in Minnesota.
