He's probably at least an average OL coach as long as you don't let him get too involved with personnel decisions. As much as he wasn't given a ton to work with in Chicago he really put his rep on the line for Webb and that obviously didn't work out.

In fact as a 7th rounder he ended up surpassing expectations. But I'm struggling to figure out how much blame he gets for lack of developing young guys like Carimi or if Webb even could have done better with better development and more time to learn on the sidelines.

Now I'm just rambling, but I'm really glad I'll never have to experience his OC work again.

He's probably a pretty good line coach. It was a much bigger mistake to think you can coach up second rate linemen then it was to hire him to be the coach in the first place. A position coach is going to hold sway over depth at his position, but it's not like Tice chose his guys over much better options. They were all garbage.

Although it is disturbing that he had 2 first rounders completely bottom out under his watch.

Yeah, that was a big issue with the Bears, I think. Swore by Tice and didn't value taking early OL until they were desperate. Killed them when the 2 first round picks both failed. Swore by Marinelli, and took on projects on the DL like Bazuin, Gilbert, and Gaines Adams. Swore by Lovie's ability with DBs (safeties in particular) and figured they could get a lot out of late picks, but guys like Afalava, Payne, Archuleta all failed.

I think those egos is why the team didn't win anything. They didn't value early picks (granted traded 2 for Cutler, but traded a high pick for Adams, traded out of the 1st the Hester/Manning year, and took a TE in the 1st).

That's the bigger issue with Tice than Webb, yeah. Especially Carimi.

From @mortreport and me: Ken Whisenhunt has accepted an offer to become the next coach of Tennessee Titans.

Really surprised he picked them over the lions.

Yeah, Whisenhunt hasn't had success in the vast quarterback wilderness, at all.

I'm not real crazy about the Whisenhunt hire. Don't necessarily hate it, but his tenure in Arizona was pretty bad after the Super Bowl appearance. My big hope is that he learned from his mistakes the first time around and will be better for it now.

Still would've preferred Zimmer and maybe Quinn, though.

He has kind of a weird career. Did good work with Big Ben. Rejuvenated Kurt Warner's career and basically put him in the HoF. But he failed with Leinart and all those scrubs AZ had. It doesn't look good that Andy Reid was able to get Kolb to play like a stud at times, but Whis couldn't get anything out of him.

I think he would have been a good fit for Detroit with an already established QB. But I wouldn't trust him to develop a QB. Just think there were other coaches I would have given a shot to before recycling him.

Pretty much my feelings. I got to the point where I really wanted Zimmer and he appeared to be 2nd on the list since they didn't want to wait on Quinn to come available. Those Jay Cutler to Tennessee rumors from a few weeks ago seem a lot nicer now, too bad Cutler signed that extension.

Apparently the front runner at the moment to be his OC is John McNulty, don't know much about him. Winston Moss, Keith Butler and Ray Horton have been mentioned as possible DCs - all 3 are pretty intriguing.

So who is Detroit going to get?

Probably Jim Caldwell.

Munchak is apparently high on the list as well. This is looking like a bad hire for Detroit.

Man, their upper management must be really terrible. With everything they have in place it would seem to be a really desirable job that you could walk into and have a ton of success.

I still have no idea why Detroit wouldn't go for Billick over these guys.

Because Billick's current job is a million times easier than coaching again? Are there reports that Billick even wants to coach again?

He interviewed for the Eagles' job last year and specifically mentioned he would listed to Detroit.

Gotcha. Well maybe there's some reason we don't know about that has kept Billick in the booth and off the sidelines

supposedly we were adamant about staying in a 4-3, and location was also an issue for Whisenhunt

I think those are all predominately 3-4 DCs too. I don't know much about Moss. I know he played in 3-4 most of his career. Butler and Horton are from the Steeler family. Butler is really intriguing. I believe the Steelers are holding the job for him whenever LeBeau retires, but that's probably never going to happen at this point. Not sure how close you guys are to being able to pull off a 3-4.

He's an idiot then. They have 2 all-pro DTs and a future all pro at DE. It would completely ruin their D to go 3-4 at this point.

Detroit Lions are hiring Jim Caldwell as their head coach, per a league source.

Wasn't he really awful with the Colts? Like in game management and planning? He basically was bailed out by having Peyton at/near his prime his one winning year in Indy, no?
