It's currency. There are certainly teams out there with more of a true "need" than we do, in the middle infield, since you have to take into account what you've got coming. Unfortunately, I would think a guy like Diaz would look at us, with all the competition he'll be facing, as a lesser option than other teams offering the same money.

Doesn't change the fact I'd love for us to get him, having tons of middle infield trade bait isn't a bad thing.

Cuban infielder Aledmys Diaz is eligible to sign with teams starting today. Cotillo reported last week that he'd start fielding offers yesterday and sign within a few days.

There was an almost-certainly-fake report over at BCB that he was signing with the Cubs, but it got me thinking. Wouldn't it be cool if we did?

We've got tons of money unspent. And despite the projection for next year, at the moment we have two pretty big holes in the infield. He's projected to get $20m-$30m and is considered either MLB-ready or very close.

Worked out for the Cardinals yesterday.

My memory is 5/75 with Samardzija wanting 5/100, but I can barely keep straight the varying degrees of speculation and discussion.

And of course they'd be buying out his arb years.

5/55 was definitely bandied about at some point. Don't recall any 5/75 talk.

I don't ever recall 5/55. Only thing I've ever heard was 5/75. And the sticking point was Samardzija wanted a NTC

Braves signed SS Andrelton Simmons to a seven-year, $58 million contract extension.

The Braves announced the news Thursday morning on their official team Twitter feed. Simmons wasn't even going to be arbitration-eligible until 2015, but the Atlanta front office loves his elite defense at shortstop and the progress he's made offensively so they went ahead and made the big commitment. Simmons is now under Braves control through the 2020 campaign. FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal was the first to report the contract's financial value.

That's a tremendous deal for the Braves

Does that buy out 1 or 2 FA years?

Well that's fun name to say

Dodgers sign SS Erisbel Arruebarruena to a five-year, $25 million deal.

The 23-year-old shortstop is expected to begin the season at Triple-A, but could eventually push Hanley Ramirez over to third base. Known better for his defensive chops than for his bat, it's unclear how his bat will play at the major league level.

Ervin Santana to the Blue Jays for 1/$14m.

Not confirmed yet.

Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes reports that Ervin Santana is debating between accepting offers from the Blue Jays and Orioles.

The Blue Jays have apparently offered a one-year, $14 million deal, while the O's are said to be on the table with a one-year deal worth $13 million plus incentives. Santana remains eager to get into camp and start pitching, so expect a deal to get done soon one way or the other.

If Baltimore signs yet another pitcher, can we somehow work out a trade for Gausman? He appears to be the odd man out even without them signing another pitcher.

For that matter, if he signs with Toronto, trade shark to Baltimore for a package built around Gausman. If he signs with Baltimore, then Stroman.

It really seems to me that we're going to find a way to extend Shark at some point.

I think that's always been plan A unless someone was going to grossly overpay for him.
