It's unbelievable that GM's have such short term memories and continue to hand out pants-on-head contracts.

What is a pants-on-head contract?

GMs hand out contracts that their owners can afford. I don't see why we should worry about it.

Derwood wants the owners to keep more money.

I want the owners to spend their money wisely, or cut overall spending a bit and drop ticket prices

Why would they do that if people are paying the prices they're at now?

The real money is in TV anyway.

Lake for Ackley would great. Sell high on Lake for a guy the Mariners would love to move on from.

Sounds like Hanley might be close to an extension with the Dodgers.

Lake for Ackley.

I like Ackley as a target, but is that really selling high on Lake? Ackley had some value as a bounce back target last year, but he was pretty bad again last year (save a few games at AAA). Guess I'm not sure what Lake's value is. Maybe Ackley is good value. I agree it makes sense from the Cubs perspective, in either case.

Ackley reminds me some of Alex Gordon. Is there enough in the numbers to hope he can have a career resurgence like Alex did?

@HotStoveCubbies Levine said the Cubs are definitely interested in signing Choo. Sorry I worded earlier tweet poorly.

Bruce Levine in closing said Cubs are saving big money chips for Tanaka and are lying in the weeds on Choo

if they grab Choo and Tanaka, and trade Samardzija for near-ML ready pitching, I would look at this offseason as a success.

Sounds like an either/or situation. Tanaka alone would be a success. Choo and a strong Samardzija trade would be a success. All 3 and I'm giddy.

That's what I interpreted it as too, with Tanaka as plan A. Although Choo might get scooped up before Tanaka leaving us with an even higher chance of being left out in the cold.

After inking outfielder Carlos Beltran last night, the Yankees have received "significant interest" in Brett Gardner, reports Andy McCullough of the Star-Ledger (via Twitter). The club is willing to deal Gardner, says McCullough, though it is not actively shopping him.

Gardner, 30, is projected by MLBTR contributor Matt Swartz to earn $4MM in his final go through arbitration before reaching the open market next year. The capable center fielder posted a .273/.344/.416 line in 609 plate appearances last year, good for 4.2 rWAR. Though his value is limited by the lack of significant team control, his low salary and ability to play any outfield position make him an intriguing trade target.

Mentioned earlier. I would be interested in seeing what it takes to get him and signing him to a 2-3 year extension.

There are so many options out there right now and between the Choo rumor, Tanaka, and Samardzija, even though the Cubs haven't done much it's still been a little fun to speculate. If nothing happens with any of those three and more meh moves get made instead it will be the biggest doom boner of them all though.

Agreed, I just translate all "lying in the weeds" as we have no chance based on previous "targets"

Which of the 2013 Yankees outfielders are free agents? They had Soriano, Gardner, Ichiro and Vernon Wells, and have added Ellsbury and Beltran
Posted
None of them. They have the DH, Wells is awful, and Gardner is a FA after 2014 and might be dealt

I really want Choo. I'm not crazy about Tanaka, but I'll be happy if they get him. I hope they hang on to Shark until the deadline.

What type of prospect/young players of ours do you guys think would be sufficient enough to net Gardner, given his contract situation and the Yankees needs? Or what package of prospects?

I want to believe so bad. It's like a terrible relationship where they keep promising they'll change.

Cubs have had discussions with 2 teams about dealing Edwin Jackson and a 3B prospect for a young reliever and a pitching prospect. The two teams are believed to be Cleveland and San Diego. The Cubs would like to free up Jackson's $11M and spread it over 2 players: an innings eating starter and a serviceable CF.

We'll see if these discussions see the light of day in Florida.

Well they need a 3B assuming ARod isn't playing and they need pitching. A friend told me he saw someone floating a Gardner and prospects for Samardzija but I'm sure there's no truth to that and as much as I like Gardner, the Yankees' pitching prospects aren't interesting enough that I would do that trade.

Haha assuming that's the case, all I have to say is Edwin Jackson, you poor bastard.

Villanueva + Valbuena for Gardner + pitching prospect?
