Cubs and the Padres have talked this week about a deal that would send Nate Schierholtz and James Russell to San Diego for pitching prospects. My source does not know if the teams are still actively talking or if the talks died down.

From MLBTradeRumors:

3:07pm: The Mariners may have topped the Yankees' offer to Cano, a source tells Anthony McCarron of the New York Daily News. That same source indicated to McCarron that the Mariners are pursuing Cano "guns-a-blazing," and making the pitch to Cano that he can either be a Yankee legend or be a baseball legend by helping the Mariners win their first World Series.

Lends credence to the texts cited above.

Burch Smith and we'll take Maybin's contract off your hands for good measure.

Can't see Cano signing with Seattle. Why would he? It's a small market team, that's no closer to winning. I think JayZ was trying to make a splash with Cano as his first client and he has alot to learn. Still would not rule out NY.

I feel the Angels are the ones that have to do big things(like pitching) this off season. Would a Mike Trumbo be available? How about a Shark, Jackson package for him?

Cano would sign for Seattle because they would pay him a ton of money, which is the type of "splash" agents like most. Seattle is also not a small market team.

Mark Trumbo is likely unavailable, since they no longer have a logjam in the OF with Bourjos gone. Trading Shark and Jackson for Trumbo would probably set the Cubs back multiple years.

Set us back? Not hardly. Shark and Jackson are not long term answers.

Seattle is small market-bottom third in MLB. Ask Griffey, Jr. or Randy Johnson.

JayZ is trying to outdo Scott Boras with no leverage or cred amongst the teams.

Shark has shown flashes of being an ace and is still harnessing his potential. Trumbo doesn't walk and doesn't have a position where he is a passable fielder. I wouldn't be happy with getting Trumbo back and they don't really have any good pitching prospects they would part with.

Surely the Seth Smith trade kills that deal one would think.

Ask them what? Both spent a decade there; Junior wanted to go home and the Mariners didn't want to extend a 35-year-old pitcher (who turned out to be a freak).

Jackson and Shark are both better than Trumbo, and Trumbo and Jackson are both the same distance from FA.

Seattle hasn't been in the bottom 3rd in MLB in payroll since...I made it back to 2001 and gave up. I'm not going to add it up but it looks like they spent more on salaries in the 2000s than the Cubs. I'll Ask Griffey and A-Rod about it, but I might also think to ask Felix Hernandez, Ichiro, Adrian Beltre, Richie Sexson, and Chone Figgins too.

Yeah, after getting Smith, my guess is Schierholtz isn't needed. Either way though, Wisler wouldn't be an option. He's a top 100 guy with upside from there.

Sign Cano or trade for Matt Kemp would be my guess.

Yep. I'd actually lean Kemp if we're talking "moves that get GMs fired".

David Price for Taijuan +?

@DCameronFG1m

As @JeffPassan and @RyanDivish note, rumors have been linking Ms to David Price today, and suggest Ms willing to pay crazy price to get him.

See to me, unless that plus is really significant, that seems a pretty reasonable deal. Pitching prospects are not the same as hitters.

EDIT: Of course that doesn't mean the Mariners should do it, that puts a lot of pressure on them to win ASAP for a team coming off a 71 win season whose best hitter is currently Kyle Seager and his .260/.338/.426 line.

Giving Cano way too much or giving a bit much for David Price just don't seem like fireable offenses to me (though they are bad decisions).

If we're talking a move that gets a GM fired, something like Taijuan+ for Kemp would seem more likely.

RT @BNightengale #Cubs signed left-handed reliever Wesley Wright to one-year contract believed to be for $1.425M.

:yahoo:

Because I don't know how to GIFs

Sign Cano to crazy contract and trade Walker and others for Price would be pretty insane. I kinda wanna see them pull it off.

That seems really cheap for a 9 k/9 guy without excessive BB numbers.

Yay our first signing of an ACTUAL regular. yay, now more please.

Sneaking in before dinner (wife still at pool)- Just read a text: Angels/Royals/Cubs have talked about deal involving Samardzija, Howie Kendrick, Hochevar and others- Bubba Starling's name has been thrown around... Back to vaca... Later gators...

Kendrick+Starling+Ventura for Samardzija and Russell, make it happen Theo.

Pretty sure ABTY's source, or one of them if he has multiple, works in some capacity for the Royals. IIRC. Edited by Cubswin11

Not crazy about Starling, although he did improve after his horrific 1st half this year.

I would be interested in Starling. The tools that made him so exciting (though I didn't want him in that draft) in the first place are still there
