Phil Hughes chatter seems to be picking up. After he goes, the mid-tier starting pitcher FA market is just about cleaned out, I think.

Does that chatter include the Cubs? Saw a couple things on Twitter, but didn't want to read.

Not that I can find. Mostly Twins, Royals, and Mets, according to Rotoworld

Arirang News reports that six MLB teams have expressed interest in Korean right-hander Suk-Min Yoon.

The 27-year-old certainly isn't as polished or as talented as fellow countryman Hyun-Jin Ryu who took the National League by storm this season, but Yoon could settle in as a decent middle of the rotation starter, or he could be used out of the bullpen. The Twins and Cubs are two teams that are known to have expressed interest in his services.

Never heard of him, anyone know anything?

From what I can remember, think Korean Carlos Villanueva.

Seems like we might be getting a Darwin Barney one-year contract before Monday's deadline.

My understanding is that the Cubs brass has been split on whether to tender him or not. Of the 10 arbitration eligible players, the consensus among insiders has been:

Will be tendered - Samardzija, Schierholtz, Wood, Russell, Strop

Leaning towards - Murphy, Barney, Valbuena

Leaning against - Bard, Gamel

The Cubs are presently at 40 on their 40-man roster, so any free agent signing will require a corresponding move.

I have no idea why you wouldn't tender Valbuena.

I kind of don't want to tender Murphy. You got your free money, now walk away while you are ahead.

I'm ambivalent, especially if they think he can play an acceptable 2B. He shouldn't get more than a trifle over the minimum, so there's worse gambles you can take on a RH platoon IF.

Murphy is a no brainer to me too. Worst case, you find 12-13 better hitters and he sits in AAA for a while. But the Cubs don't have enOugh good players to make him a non asset yet.

After their meetings this week, Cano and the Yankees are apparently $80 million apart.

Cano asked for 9 years / $ 252 million (with a vesting option for a 10th year)

The Yankees are offering 7 years / $170 million.

It feels to me like the parties probably know they're stuck with each other and that, eventually, they'll just say screw it and meet in the middle around 8 years / $ 210 or something like that. I really don't see any way this doesn't get done.

Yeah, I don't see too many other teams jumping in on 8years/$200 million.

The Rays have contacted the Cubs on the availability of Anthony Rizzo- were rebuffed to this point however discussion involving a swap of Dan Vogelbach for pitching has also taken place...

It'd be pretty hilarious if Voges ended up traded to the Rays since we've been spitballing that for what seems like years.

A source told me this morning that the Cubs are "heavily negotiating" with a relief pitcher - only information was that it's not a name previously linked to the Cubs. No indication on what length of contract, whether closer or setup, or when an announcement could happen.

The Cubs FO is paying very close attention to the potential non-tenders - they are supposedly targeting a specific starter from that group. They would prefer to keep Villanueva in the bullpen, and are not exactly enamored with having Rusin or Cabrera be the #5.

Non-tender candidate might be Mike Pelfrey. Seems like the kind of move this team is looking at right now.

It wouldn't make any sense for Kennedy to be non-tendered after the Padres traded real assets for him at the deadline and he pitched decently down the stretch.

Hudson I could see interest in, but he doesn't really fit the idea of adding someone because you don't trust Villanueva, as he won't be ready until later in 2014.
