Cubs have inquired about Texas OF Craig Gentry's availability. Cubs envision him as having a good right-handed bat and playing decent defense to man CF or RF in a platoon role. No details given to me on what the Rangers asked for in return.

Holy cow...he was worth 3.4 fWAR this year in only 106 G.

No kidding. In MLB he's averaged 44 SB per 600 PA at an 85% clip, and a +30 UZR/150 in CF. That's taking speed and defense to the exteeeeeeeeeeeeeme.

I wonder what he'd cost. Texas isn't a dumb organization, so I can't imagine we can count on them to undervalue him by much.

The flip side is that he turns 30 this week and is arbitration eligible for the first time, plus he's had a very disproportionate amount of playing time against LHP(50/50 PAs for his career). I have no idea how they'd value him though.

ABTY checks in again

Good morrow fellas...

-Schierholtz getting a lot of calls after teams put off by FA asking prices...Royals, Pirates, Yankees, Mariners, Marlins, D'Backs, possibly upto five others in play- as likely to be dealt as anyone on the team...

-Samardzija hot (duh) however plenty of teams checking in on Travis Wood as well...

Posted
I like how much overlap there is between the Schierholtz and Samardzija suitors.

How do people generally feel about attempting to sell high on Travis Wood to a team that might buy into his 2013 ERA too much?

I can't imagine Wood is on the block. I believe this is the first year he is arb eligible.

Nobody said he was on the block.

It would have to be an overpay. Like a package similar to what is expected from Samardzija, maybe a little less.

My personal feeling -- on a team as bad as the 2013 Cubs, very few should be untouchable. I would listen but it would take a lot to get Wood considering his cost, age and upside.

No reason not to always look to maximize value in all spots. At some point, though, present value needs to be a factor just as much as projected future value.

Upside? We've seen it.

I don't know about him being able to command that much, but I agree that with nobody holding a gun to our head, we'd need to get surplus value for it to be worth it.

So you're projecting the rest of his career to be much worse than his 2013? He made something 500-600K last year. He could get worse and still be worth the increase he will get as a first year arb player.

I don't think it's been expressed enough, but thank you for sharing your rumor-mill knowledge. It doesn't really matter to me connecting actual moves to rumors for some kind of accuracy count, it's a great read either way and puts a little shape around front office thinking.

I said we've seen his upside. I didn't say any of that other stuff.

I agree that it's interesting to get actual names tied to teams and nothing extra. Too many of these threads go off on a tangent.

it seems like there will definitely be some stuff going on with the cubs at the winter meetings, so that's fun.

Obviously, you sell high on Wood if possible, but is anyone else getting tired of every young player with promise being rumored to be shipped out "for the future"?

I guess I just feel if Wood and Samardzija are gone, there are no more "sure things" in the rotation and we're almost starting over. Depending on other acquisitions, of course.
