I'm on like year 5 of my RTTS on The Show and Gamel somehow winded up on the Cardinals in like my 2nd year and has been a annual MVP candidate ever since. So we have that going for us, which is nice.

In before sneakypower makes his really funny joke again about me liking Mat Gamel when he was a prospect. Then him disappearing when I bring up his love for Francis Beltran, who might be dead.

I sincerely doubt they're looking at Gamel as a 3B. Outfield corner and backup 1B most likely.

I think he's out of options though, so I imagine he's cut at the end of spring training if he doesn't impress.

Yeah he was supposed to hold down 1B in Milwaukee this year with Hart out and then move to 1B / corner OF backup (Hart was supposed to come back). My guess is that things don't look good for his future if Milwaukee cut him. They were just as bad as the Cubs this year and have a smaller budget. If they thought Gamel could produce much of anything at the league minimum they would've kept him.

What's great about fliers is that you can take out as many as you want and they don't take up much space, and you can toss them as you please.

But I'd love it if he were to have a breakout season and cause Brewer's fans to flip out for two years.

Lot of interesting big league ready 3B depth between Olt, Gamel, and Vitters.

Once you get good, not really. The Cubs have been "lucky" they could give a flier to any waived player because there was always an expendable piece they could part with. As we improve and get a fuller 40/25 man roster, that gets harder to justify fliers.

Well now we've finally learned that SCS doesn't actually know how signing baseball players works. Suddenly a lot of his past posts make more sense.

Loose definition of the words "Lot" "interesting", "big", "league", "ready", "3B", "depth" and "between" make that sentence potentially true.

When was the last time Gamel actually played 3rd base? I could be way off but I thought that ship sailed 3 years ago. It wouldn't shock me if Junior Lake was ahead of Gamel and Vitters on the 3rd base depth chart.

Villanueva most likely is as well

If by big league ready depth, we're talking bridges to Baez or Bryant that could potentially offer big payoffs in what's likely to be another season focused more upon building than anything else, I'm not sure why anyone would take issue with the terminology. I'd certainly rather cycle through them than another round of Lillibridges and Murphys. But what do I know.

The issue is that they are not third basemen. The organization publicly announced that Vitters is a LF now, and Gamel had converted to 1B because he was a horrific defender at 3B, THEN blew out his knee which has put him out of commission for the last 18 months. Lillibridge and Murphy have actually done something at the MLB level in their careers, which makes them preferable to the injury prone, maybe-good-enough-bat-for-3B-but-definitely-can't-field-3B that Gamel and Vitters offer.

Didn't realise quite how awful Gamel was at 3rd. Hadn't heard about Vitters being offically name a LF either; I thought he'd been making progress at 3rd. I still like the idea of stocking up on boom or busts, regardless of the likelyhood, or lack there of of them booming.

Either way, all of these guys might be terrible, but if just one of them makes it up to play putrid baseball for a year until Baez or Bryant is ready, that means we're deep at the position, right? Right?!
