Help me understand why the Cubs claimed him off of waivers only to non-tender him? Are they planning on signing him to a minor league contract or is he just gone? I'm not complaining, I really just don't understand.

Help me understand why the Cubs claimed him off of waivers only to non-tender him? Are they planning on signing him to a minor league contract or is he just gone? I'm not complaining, I really just don't understand.

 

Pretty sure the idea is to try to sign him to a minor league deal. Claiming him prevents another team from getting their hands on him, and demonstrates their interest to the player. You might also get the chance to work him out and get a better sense of where he stands on the depth chart before having to make the non-tender decision.

Yeah, that and/or maybe wanting their own doctors/trainers take a look at him since he's coming off an injury and has had other injuries in the past?
