It's really not possible for them to be bad enough for them to have a shot at one of the impact draft picks is it (outside of a repeat of the Rose miracle/fix)?

If they continue to win 1 of every 5 it could be. They are only 1.5 games out of the bottom 3.

Yeah at this point I could easily see it happening. When we are consistently outclassed by terrible teams at home and then basically toyed with against good teams on the road, its hard to imagine many victories.

To add to that the injury prone core is just about hitting their maximum injury potential with Butler, Deng, Hinrich and Rose all banged up (I'm sure Noah is playing with some sort of injury as well - he always is).

Despite a season that has been wrecked by injuries, the Chicago Bulls are determined not to trade impending free agent forward Luol Deng, sources told ESPN.com.

Teams have been inquiring about Deng's availability recently as the Bulls have sunk in the standings following a knee injury that ended Derrick Rose's season.

But sources said that is not in the team's plans. Despite failing to come to terms on a contract extension before the season, the Bulls remain optimistic they will be able to re-sign Deng next summer

idiotic if true

It probably is true, given the history of Chicago Bulls basketball. Probably think, "just get healthy and we can make a run again".

I understand that making numbers work in a Deng trade would be challenging, but I'm starting to wonder if Gar-Pax is delusional, prideful, or just lazy.

It doesn't make any sense though. Maybe you could say that last year or the year before, but unlike the previous years, part of the core is going to be a FA and looking for a raise. The team is already well over the luxury tax and stands to become repeaters and face a much stiffer penalty if they are over the tax next year. They cannot and will not be able to bring back the core next year. There is no way JR is going to see all the injuries that destroyed every key player on this team the last 3 years, see how much money he spent for said team, and then be ok with raising the payroll significantly (because of Deng raise and repeater tax increase) to bring back the same team. Even if they amnesty Boozer and replace him with Mirotic and draft picks, it's just not going to happen.

So either this report is true and GarPax is a complete moron or this is just a leak from the Bulls FO to prevent destroying whats left of the Bulls psyche and to not appear desperate while finding a taker for Deng.

Oh I know it doesn't make any sense, but between the post-Jordan years and the last few years when they've not been good enough and kept status quo, I don't have much faith that they aren't a little delusional.

Well apparently we are bad enough to tank even while holding onto our core. Cost and flexibility are now big parts of my motivation for a big sell off but if the owners are willing to roll with the roster and salary... And we're still able to tank, I guess there's some optimism there.

@ZachLowe_NBA: Not sure why LAL would take Pierce for Pau. Wild card is CHI: If they want to blow it up, they've found a possible Boozer dumping ground.

@ZachLowe_NBA: (To be clear: That was me floating idea of Boozer/Pierce-centered trade b/w BKN and CHI, should CHI just give up).

I would like that.

Much as I would loathe having Paul Pierce on the Bulls, any opportunity to get Boozer's contract off the books has to be explored.

If they re-sign Deng I might have to give up having hope for this team until the administration, etc. leaves. That would be unconscionably insane. It would be getting the coach the administration doesn't even seem to *like* his aging, injury-prone, blankie. A blankie that's very good at basketball yes, but has had absurd amounts of minutes piled on his body, and costs way too much. It's a basketball hell move.

Basically an italian article about Real Madrid trying to re-sign Mirotic. But man some of the translation is good stuff.

From the United States as a means of prestige and ESPN reported that the Bulls are willing to throw the house out the window for Mirotic .

He is very young and the Bulls are a black hole where you will not harvest more than defeats. Best win titles and incidentally expect their rights to go to a winning team or the Bulls stop being a black hole.

The Bulls/Lakers game TNT had scheduled for MLK Day has been flexed out in favor of Rockets vs. Blazers.

cool season bros

Haha, didn't know TNT could do that.

And yet, the Bulls are only a 1/2 game back of the 8-seed. With a .400 winning percentage.

I see that Melo has us on his short list of teams he'd play for. Obviously it'd take some maneuvering to make it happen, worth it or not?

I'd rather keep Deng for about 1/3 of the salary it would take to sign Melo

1/3?

As a FA Melo's max (and what he will get) is 4 years 96+/-, in a s&t it's 5 years 130+/-. Igoudala got a 4/48 contract this past offseason, which I think is a fair comp for Deng, and Deng probably will get a little less. I figure 4/40 is a fair guess for what Deng gets, so 1/3 was selling a bit short likely. But the point was there are some significant savings in keeping Deng that hopefully could go towards adding either one more good-decent FA or a few good role guys.
