Ha, my buddy overheard Theo talking to Carrie Muskat

"Maybe we should have invited Girardi to this game"

gross I hope that isn't true

Yeah, what an idiot, being all happy knowing that our top prospects are going to be awesome major leaguers. Makes me wanna puke, what with his confidence that we'll have a better future than the stinking Yankees. Bring back MacPhail/Hendry, they are true pros.

yeah, on a day where two NL central teams played for the right to go to the NLCS and the cubs were apparently spurned by their top managerial choice, I would be kinda grossed out by theo walking around with his chest puffed out about a 19 year old's 4-5 day in a glorified scrimmage. I mean, i'm pumped about the farm system too, but I bet girardi gives zero fucks about albert almora.

and I understand that if theo did say this (which I really doubt) he was likely joking.

So you're arguing, and getting all pumped up, on the premise that Theo MIGHT HAVE ACTUALLY SAID THAT SERIOUSLY? Did you leave your common sense lying around somewhere?

1) It wasn't just Almora

2) I pretty much guarantee you that the Cubs having the best collection of positional talent in the minors is very much of interest to whoever they pitch the job to. It's not the end all or anything, but it's a big selling point, make no mistake about that.

And of course Theo (if he said it) was at least half joking.

yeah, i'd prefer Theo just not be joking at any point ever given his monumental failure to turn an expansion team into a pennant winner in two years

he hasn't earned that privilege

I have no idea why you doubt it.

And of [expletive] course he was kidding.

If I were a manager, minor-league talent would be pretty far from my mind unless it was really right on the cusp of breaking into the majors. These guys are 4-6 years away from their primes. We could be three managers down the line by then.

Any manager looking at the Cubs opening sure as [expletive] is going to be thinking a lot about minor league talent.

well it's all the cubs have going for them right now, so that's pretty much the only thing they could consider.

Even though he's obviously joking, it still kind of tells you how excited Theo is about these guys.

After he was canned, Sveum was bemoaning not having opportunity to be here when these prospects arrive, so it's not as if it's an afterthought to these guys. And I think it's entirely possible that these kids start showing up in late 2014-early 2015.

Like I said, it's certainly not some kind of trump card or lynch pin to their sales pitch , but if I were looking at the job, "there's a ton of talent in the upper levels" sure would sound a lot better to me than "there's not much help on the way", particularly when the big league team is so bad right now. It's definitely not a non-factor. I mean why wouldn't you be at least intrigued by the fact that the system is positioned to dump a bunch of talent in your lap over the next few years?

I'd be thinking mostly about getting my money paid upfront

And just because they're 4-5 years or w/e away from their primes doesn't mean they can't/won't be upgrades to the roster and good players pretty quickly.

Just look what happened to Sveum. He knew what the plan was and the plan was going along swimmingly but he was canned anyway.

Every "baseball person" out there is skeptical of prospects until they prove themselves as major leaguers. They may like the idea of working with the next big thing, but what they all want is to work with the Dodgers roster. They want established players they can pencil in and rely on to get the job done. They want to win now.

With kids, even if things work out, you can suffer through multiple years of underperformance before seeing them at their best. You can lose your job due to losing while everybody is waiting on the prospects. The Cubs just fired Sveum even though the major league results pretty much matched expectations. And if you fail there is no guarantee you will get another opportunity. There is great risk in taking a job where the eventual success depends on guys who are now 22. It will take time to see that success, and you will be blamed for any of those 22 year olds aren't as good as people thought they could be.

Arismendy also played his career high in games this season, and participated in the Future's Game over the ASB. He might still play in the Dominican Winter League.

Yeah, Alcantara is on Licey's roster in the DWL. Of course they have Jurickson Profar on their roster so playing time might be tough to come by.

Why would that matter? Isn't Profar a SS and Alcantara pretty much slotted for 2B?

With Elvis Andrus at SS, I'd imagine the Rangers want Profar to get reps at 2B. I haven't seen a full roster for Licey yet but I expect there will be a more established MIF to go with Profar and Alcantara and Alcantara would end up being the low man on that totem pole.

This is exactly what I took away from the alleged comment. Don't see how Theo being enamored with our farm could be described as "gross", but whatever.

it obviously wasn't impressive enough to pull girardi away from the yankees' decrepit roster.

Duh, because hello, he didn't go to that arizona fall league game. Come on.
