I will be so very mad if Rakuten decides not to post him

why? makes samardzidja more valuable this season, then we just spend 20 mil next year and negotiate with tanaka.

Do people really think he can be an ace? I'm asking out of ignorance.

Most in the media who would know have put a #2 label on him.

Because I want Masahiro Tanaka in a Cubs uniform more than anything else this offseason. That's why. It's irrational, and I don't care.

It's not irrational. Tanaka makes the Cubs better in 2014 and that matters.

But it's probably more likely we can afford him next season

They should have made it where the Japanese team gets the posting fee from all teams in case of a tie with the winning bid, it keeps the Japanese teams happy for windfall players like Tanaka and it keeps teams from bidding the $20 million with no intention of being serious about signing.

What would be the point of making the bid with no intention of signing? I'm not sure I follow that.

I can think of a couple reasons. It would give you a chance to kick the tires and see if you fall into a "always wanted to play in Chicago" situation, for one (unlikely, for sure). Second, it helps give your fan base the impression that you are doing everything you can to improve the team.

Also say if you're the Marlins and you're trying to sell your team vs. the Yankees, you probably don't feel good about your chances to begin with in regards to being a more desirable location or offering a better contract... so you don't bother ponying up the money for the rights to negotiate.

Why doesn't he just swim here like the Cuban guys?

Car boats are where it's at.

ESPN's Buster Olney reports that other teams in Japan are considering giving the Rakuten Golden Eagles money to make up for their diminished posting fee of Masahiro Tanaka.

That's apparently how badly the rival clubs want to see Tanaka out of town. Rakuten to this point has said they're unsure whether to accept the $20 million posting fee for Tanaka or just hang on to him. Ultimately, the Japanese right-hander should be posted.

lmao, well maybe those clubs shouldn't have voted to cap the posting fee at $20m. or had they not considered the possibility that boning a rival club out of ~$30m might change that club's plans?

Now what? Not getting posted.

Doesn't look like there's been any decision. A Japanese article recycled the Gammons quote and someone on twitter picked it up.

Yep, fake rumor.

Bruce Levine just said on The Score that the Cubs are still really interested and could go $80-100M ultimately. He reminded us that we went $80M on Annibel Sanchez bid. He says the $$$ is there and dropped the figure of $400M in current revenue and above $500M in future revenue(tv deal and Wrigley improvements). WOW! They had Jason McLeod on and when Tanaka came up, McLeod was pretty enthusiastic.

Tanaka would be the guy to spend some money on this offseason, but those numbers sure make you wonder about Ricketts' credibility.
