If you had the choice, do you take Tanaka choosing one team to negotiate with or all teams that tie being able to offer him their best deal?

Choose one team. Like someone said, maybe he had a Sosa jersey as a kid or something.

I think the former is lower percentage chance he's a Cub, but a better contract if he does choose them.

Best deal from everyone. Odds seem better to me anyway.

Oh and it needs to be mentioned again just how [expletive] stupid Jesse Rogers is.

But it's so typical of [expletive] that's been going on lately for this to happen right after we hear that finances aren't an issue for the posting fee.

Not to be a conspiracy theorist, but...

Sharma just brought up an interesting point that I was just thinking about, what if all the winning bids were non-refundable? NPB wins when there's a premium talent like Tanaka, and teams have to be real careful that they don't just pretend like they're going to go after a player and then never really pitch for his services.

Certainly eliminates most. I could see us, Angels, Dodgers, and Yanks willing to go for it. Maybe Texas.

Theo kind of just blew off the whole report about the Cubs and the bid money/debt thing from today and said it all comes from the same pool of money regardless.

@JeffPassan: Source: In MLB's posting proposal, there is a $20M maximum posting fee. In case of tie, player free to sign with any team with top bid.

@pgammo: Not only are Rakuten Golden Eagles opposed to ever-changing US posting rules, but tonight leaning against posting Tanaka, period.

@JeffPassan: Worth noting: Rakuten owner Hiroshi Mikitani is far from traditional Japanese owner. As @pgammo said, he could reject posting Tanaka at all.

According to the BA article, the winning bids get to duke it out for the player's services. If that is the case, there goes my hope for signing Tanaka. I can see the Dodgers and Yankees going all out for him.

That would suck. I could see where they would be very upset about the rule change just before cashing in on a player.

They can wait and do it the following year and still get the 20 mill. I can definitely see them holding off.

If not though, what kind of contract does Tanaka get on the open market? At 25, would a team go more than 6 years on him? Is 6/120 realistic? I think that's in the area If he does get posted.

That's so weird to me. An FA bidding situation across multiple teams is going to drive up his contract considerably.

MLB came to the table wanting to lower costs. NBP wanted to keep posting fees high. Somehow they both managed to do the exact opposite?

Damn, they tried to HIRE Theo as a consultant, while he was on leave from Boston. Maybe we do have a legit "in" with Tanaka after all.

Makes sense. Rest of NPB mad that one team is about to have a huge windfall and vote in favor of something against their best long term interests.

Rakuten.

What is not posting him going to accomplish besides alienating your best player and costing yourself twenty million dollars?

They get to keep their best player?

It keeps being hard to remember that other teams want to have good baseball players on their team.

You get to enjoy another year of one of the best players in Japan, and you can still get your 20 million next offseason. They may even hold out slim hope the rules get to change again.

@BenBadler3m

Rakuten is obviously opposed to a cap on posting fees, but the expectation is they will still post Masahiro Tanaka.

@npbtracker Sanspo is saying that NPB is going to accept the $20m posting fee limit & the new posting rules

Damnit.

It'd be really funny if we were ready to drop a $75m posting and this costs us the player. Epstein's going to start believing in curses soon.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

Fun times ahead...

The Rakuten Golden Eagles are now "leaning against" posting right-hander Masahiro Tanaka this offseason, according to Peter Gammons of MLB Network.

The new posting system proposal between MLB and NPB includes a $20 million limit for posting fees, a number that could convince some owners in the NPB that it's not worth posting their players, both now and in the future. It would be a huge loss for Tanaka and MLB, as the 25-year-old is viewed by many as the biggest catch among pitchers on the open market. It's a situation certainly worth monitoring in the coming weeks.
