Almora should be third or fourth on that list. People severely underestimate his hitting ability. If there's one guy in the system with the best bet to hit .300 in the majors, it's him.

This is your friendly reminder that Rizzo hit .331/.404/.652 as a 21 year old in AAA.

For NEXT year, in the majors, I'd put Rizzo, Schierholtz, and Castro(think he'll snap back bigtime) ahead of Javy. I'd put Bryant next, by the way, ahead of Castillo.

I didn't say potential. I meant like right now, if everyone in the organization got 600 PAs in the majors, where would Baez rank in offensive production?

Fair enough move Rizzo to 1 then. I'm just not a huge fan.

I would really like to know what's changed with Maples that has sparked this new-found control/command. Someone do some [expletive] reporting, please.

John Arguello did some reporting on that just tonight, actually...

Was told they had him scrap the change-up and told him not to worry about hitting spots and trying to set up hitters, just be aggressive and go right after them. He's been lights out since then.

Rob Z 3IP 2H 0R 2W 4K. I'm having a really hard time placing guys like him, Skulina, Masek, Frazier, Wilson, Torrez, and Leal in a top 30. Obviously not all make it, hope we hear more on each guys stuff. Arguello says Torrez is up to 93, by the way and certainly has control. He's going to be really tough to leave off......

He was up to 93 last year in the DSL too. This year, he's been working 90-92; topped out at 94 in one of his starts.

In Baez's last 20 games: 83 AB, 15 R, 28 H, 8 2B, 5 HR, 20 RBI, 11 BB, 24 K, 7 SB, 1 CS, .337/.415/.614.

In his first 17 games in AA: 70 AB, 11 R, 16 H, 3 2B, 8 HR, 15 RBI, 3 BB, 25 K, 0 SB, 0 CS, .229/.260/.614.

I'd say he's a fast learner...

Definitely, and I like Vitters.

Thought this was interesting, Baez and Puig now have the same number of AA plate appearances.

You also think Vitters will be able to start in MLB too.

So the entire difference in their numbers is pretty much the 3 HBP for Puig.

In OBP, yes, most of that difference is HBP and IBB. The big differences to me were K rate(an important reminder given Puig's MLB K%), HR/SLG(really helps you appreciate how obscene Baez's power is), and the fact that Baez is 20 and plays middle infield while Puig was 22 in corner OF

Encouraging. In that vein, early indications are optimistic with respect to Ks: 33.9 K% July, 20.6% K% thus far in August.

Also, yesterday's Baez HR. Clip includes a look at his swing from the first base side. Seconds 43-45 should probably be a GIF.

Thanks, cal. That's pretty encouraging. Every RHP can throw that hard or harder, but lots need to back off some to throw strikes.

With 15 walks in 153 pro innings, we know he's not overthrowing.

His K-rate has improved quite a bit this year. (Last year 50K/75IP; this year 40/39.) For that to happen while taking the major step from DSL to American minors suggests that he's probably improved and has some kind of breaking ball that's working for him.

My sense is that the cubs are pretty strict about limiting how hard guys throw. Perhaps for some combo of health/mechanics/control reasons. May be that some guys like this will be "allowed" to throw harder later, if they can still control it and maintain their mechanics.

That ball was a majestic, soaring blast.

That bat speed may honestly be the best I have ever seen. Sheffield was very quick. Bonds' swing was quick and extremely short. But I have seen several videos of Javy this year and there is a split second where u can't even see the bat.
