As in the 20-80 scale. Reading Parks has rubbed off on me.

I still don't know what that means.

Obscure prospect lingo makes people sound really cool so just go with it.

I have zero issue with #want, #rig, or any hashtag, scouting grades, etc.....But "spec" is a term I wish I'd never see again.

Might just be a plant by the Cubs, but Heyman says we are back to extension talks with Garza:

http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/jon-heyman/22684616/in-big-switch-cubs-are-now-considering-signing-garza-longterm

In what could be a dramatic turnaround, the Cubs are now considering keeping righthanded starter Matt Garza on the North Side of Chicago.

Cubs officials recently have broached such a possibility, and while a trade still remains an option for Garza, for the first time in more than a year there are discussions about possibly signing Garza long-term. It had been presumed for weeks he would be traded for sure.

The Cubs could also trade Garza, then try to re-engage him in the winter, another distinct possibility.

We're not getting our asking price obviously. I doubt they want to stretch this out. Between what happened last year, him throwing up a few clunker outings, and other pitchers entering the market, its time to do SOMETHING soon with him.

My personal hope is still to get Skaggs+ for him at the deadline and then sign him back this winter since he wouldn't require any compensation.

That would make me so very happy

This is a very delicious proposition: :good:

the Cubs and the Giants have a mutual scouting relationship going on right now.

Tom has heard that the Giants will have a top scout to watch Garza's start tonight while we have heard internally that the Cubs have had scouts at various levels of the Giants system. Today I communicated with Justin Gallagher, editor of the San Juan Star, via Twitter (follow him here) and he told me that the Cubs had scouts to see 21 year old LHP Edwin Escobar's start last night.

Escobar is 3-4 with a 3.01 ERA but, more impressively, has struck out 11.09 batters per 9 IP while walking just 2.05/9 IP. As mentioned, he keeps the ball in the park, allowing just 0.36 HRs/9IP and his FIP is a ridiculous 1.98.

http://www.chicagonow.com/cubs-den/2013/07/the-latest-on-matt-garza-could-the-cubs-get-these-3-players-from-the-giants/

Gallagher also told me to keep an eye on a pitcher named Ty Blach. I'm less familiar with Blach, but Gallagher gave me this report,

Outstanding command, fastball usually sits 91-93. Good change up. His command stands out. Cal League is a notoriously offensive league. Throws a ton of strikes, guys haven't hit him.

Blach is a 22 year old LHP pitcher in the aforementioned California League. Blach has walked less than a batter per 9 innings (0.90) while striking out 8.13 batters per 9 innings. His FIP is outstanding at 2.31.

They're might not be able to pry Kyle Crick away but I heard the Cubs were amongst six teams scouting his last start in the minors.

We both pretty much ruled out Kyle Crick as a return but when I mentioned that the Cubs may want an MLB ready player, he did mention LHP Mike Krickham, whom we talked about in the previous article and also Gary Brown, whom we also talked about in that same piece linked above.

If the Cubs are seeking LHPs from San Jose -- where Gallagher says the real prizes are, then perhaps Brown makes more sense, especially in light of what Jed Hoyer said today in his conference call that the Cubs would like to add a RH bat whether it's from the farm or one he can acquire. Well, Brown fits in nicely as a RH outfielder who has shown an improvement in his offensive numbers of late. He's the Giants former top propect (currently #4 on BA's list) and an excellent athlete who runs extremely well and can handle CF.

This move would let Junior get a bit more seasoning in AAA before getting called up.

Granted the Garza extension talk talk could simply be them trying to add leverag. But they could also in fact be considering extending Garza. If nobody's offering up a worthwhile return, then why not? The upcoming FA class offers little. This way we have a 4 strong starting pitchers going forward, 5 if you count Villanueva. We could then focus our assets toward upgrading the offense and the bullpen.

I'm not opposed to to re-signing in the offseason but would be disappointed if we didn't package him and Navarro for a significant return.

I really do hope the Cubs part ways with Garza. Need more pitching prospects.

pitchers are actually much cooler than pitching prospects.

It's all it is. I'd be shocked if the boys didn't trade Garza.

If they really want him back, they have a chance in the offseason. Yes, it would be a risk because Garza might fall in love with his new team, but I have a hard time believing that with what we have been doing, that they'd extend Garza instead of getting more prospects for him.

Now, there is a chance we don't trade him, tender him and get a pick, but to ink him to an extension seems very, very unlikely.

Wait, what?

Navarro?

What exactly does he have to do with this?

I believe there was a mention somewhere in media land that Navarro and Garza have been working great during his past four starts and that they might be a nice package deal for a team.

But hasn't it been more about him not wanting to work with Castillo as opposed to being life partners with Navarro?

It was mentioned by one of the local beat reporters that Navarro has been Garza's personal catcher and provides a nice bat off the bench with some pop for a contender.

do not want gary brown. we already have 4th outfielders in the system.

Man I didn't realize how he'd slumped this year. Those are some pedestrian numbers.

Then again, we were saying that about Dom Brown and he finally remembered how to hit this season.
