At 21 Castro hit .307/.341/.432 over an entire season. At least he has shown the ability to hit in the big leagues at some point in his career. I'm not saying Russell is going to suck forever, but he is killing the offense and was brought up way too early.

Wow a 21 year old 1.3 WAR player at 2B is sure killing the team. I mean seriously are you just that dense or are you trolling?

Let me simplify this. We have every logical reason to believe Castro peaked, the league adjusted to him, and it's downhill from here.

We also have every logical reason to assume Russell will continue to improve and surpass Castros current value as well as his futures. I mean is this [expletive] rocket science? This isn't even a subjective topic to me. It should be obvious.

Good post. The people down on Russell are laughable.

We had every reason to believe Castro would improve when he was Russell's age and instead it's down to the toilet.

Face it we don't know a fukken thing, it's all stupid

I'll let your middle school insults slide. I realize that some people feel they have to insult others to make themselves feel better about themselves. If your life is so miserable that you need to name call, fine. But seriously, please try reading and comprehending prior to responding. I never said that Russell wouldn't improve. I'm just pointing out that he is not helping the team. His WAR is entirely predicated on his defensive value which is far from being an exact measure of value of a player. There is no reason at all that they should have rushed him to the big leagues this year. Offensively, Russell has been as bad as Castro.

I'm insulting you because your post was just off-the-wall madness. And look - you said it again. "He is not helping the team". Really?

So critique the post, not the person.

I dunno, I feel like I was one of the sharper crayons in the box, and I wasn't insulting people in middle school by calling them dense. He definitely hit you with at least a high school caliber insult bro. Gotta give him credit for that at least.

I don't think calling someone dense is over the line. Sorry though.

If it is, it's certainly one of the tamer personal attacks on this site.

Just because Castro got worse at age 25 doesn't mean we should throw away projections and just say, oh we don't know anything

We can expect Russell to get better from his age 21 season, and he's already better than Castro. So he's not a problem, duh

I know thats a very simplistic way to look at it but.....thats how I look at it.

Castro is 2nd to last among all qualified players in WAR behind only Pablo Sandoval by .1 WAR

Castro is dead last among qualified players in oWAR with -24.9, Alexei Ramirez is a distant 2nd with -21.9

Castro is 3rd to last among all qualified players in wRC+ trailing only Omar Infante and Alexei Ramirez.

Castro is hitting .139/.169/.177/.346 in the month of July

Do you have any living, breathing, starting pitchers with at least one working limb?

no kidding. I wouldnt even demand a starting pitcher. just a living breathing pitcher with a working arm.

How about Castro, Jokisch, Villanueva and Torres for Shields and Upton?

Not keen on giving up Torres for a rental. There are other bullets the Cubs can use in that chamber.

Ugh, it's just a disappointing fall for Castro. He has those intrinsic qualities that should make him a decent player. If he just stops reaching out there with his ass...

Tyson Ross scares me because of his high slider usage and lack of really a 3rd pitch. We all know of Cashner. I like James Shields, but damn, should've signed him in the off-season instead of dealing Castro now. Oh well.

Perfect example of why you folks who scream to "just sign him as a free agent and not lose prospects!!" are completely oblivious to the fact that ANYONE can sign him as a free agent. Getting Ross or Shields for Castro would be more than he's worth, by a lot.

Castro hasnt shown, at any level, that he's anything more than a "see ball, hit ball" player. Russell hasnt shown a ton of patience or power up to this point, but he's shown that he's better at it than Castro, so you can project him at a higher obp and slg. Plus that defense.

When they make Baez the starting 2B or SS I am all for Castro coming off the bench and pinch hitting late in games. His numbers in the 9th inning or later are probably pretty good still.
