Here's an article from the best Chicago has to offer:

One former AL general manager who is now a National League scout agreed to handicap all of the Cubs known candidates provided he remained anonymous. Here are his thoughts:

A.J. Hinch:

“No way can they hire him. He did a very poor job in Arizona and he would be a terrible fit in a pressure cooker like Chicago. Theo has to get this hire right and risking it on Hinch would be a huge mistake. He is a good guy and he has good baseball intelligence but managing the Cubs? No way would I do that.”

Dave Martinez:

“Solid guy and a solid baseball man. Was always exceptionally well prepared as a player despite not being the most talented guy on the roster. He played the game the right way and he has worked very hard to learn his craft as a coach next to maybe the best manager in the game in Joe Maddon. I would expect his teams to play hard and to be very well prepared. I would have no hesitation hiring him in Chicago.”

Rick Renteria:

“Super guy and very well respected around baseball. Knows the game and understands player development and is ready to be a major league manager. I’m just not sure his laid back personality plays to the pressure cooker environment that is Chicago. A very solid candidate.”

Torey Lovullo:

“Another solid baseball man who is ready to manage at the big league level. He has a very good resume and he is a good guy. Not sure that he is the exact profile of what Theo and Jed are looking for but he is solid and would do a good job.”

Brad Ausmus:

“They better hurry if they want to land him because Detroit and Washington both love him. I think he has the most upside of all of the candidates on their list because while he hasn’t done it, he looks to me to have star written all over him. Intense, educated and a great understanding of the game. His passion should excite the Cubs fan base once they get some of the kids from the system to the big leagues. He needs time to develop as a manager but that’s exactly what the Cubs can give him. They aren’t winning next year so why not take a shot on hitting a home run.”

So full of contradictions.

Given Kaplan's public infatuation over Ausmus the last two weeks, I find it hard to believe he isn't his own anonymous source. Not that I have a problem with Brad.

According to Mark Gonzales, Renteria is getting a 2nd interview this week. Have any other candidates been confirmed for round 2?

Not that I know of, but Lovullo hasn't even gotten round 1 yet.

Given the candidates that have been interviewed, or that the Cubs have been linked to, is there a common theme that we can derive from these candidates? I know Latin background, ability to develop young players, streamlined communication with the FO, etc. but is there one theme that's been more prevalent than any other during the interview/search process?

Also, other than just being interested in the process and end result, do you guys really care about the whole manager thing? Before I started reading this site, I remember getting really excited about the Baker and Piniella hirings (started lurking the board around '06) but I've now come to the realization that in most cases, the search for a new manager is mostly a media-driven hoopla. Having said that, I'm coming around now to the idea that this hire is a bit more important than I initially believed.

With the regression of castro/rizzo, the new manager hire is quite important as the next couple of years are absolutely critical for the FO's plan to come to fruition. Current market trends with respect to FA and how it relates to ownership's inability to spend is going to put the Cubs in a really huge hole if the prospects and Castro/Rizzo don't develop into above average/all-star level players, especially with the Cardinals {redacted} being loaded for the next 5-6 years.

I honestly don't care. They're not going to hire a complete idiot. And whoever they hire, we'll question tons of in-game moves anyway.

I would have been intrigued if it was Girardi, just because I would have been thinking to get him, they would have promised more of an immediate ascent. And it may have had an effect on our offseason plans.

I agreed with that thinking on Girardi, but should we be curious if the reverse is true? The inability to land Girardi was because we couldn't make any sort of assurance that we'd make a commitment this offseason?

I still value leadership, nebulous as that may be.

Yeah, I care. I want our next manager to be the guy who becomes a legend in this town for riding the Cubs to the top. We all do. Maybe it's difficult to say a manager can positively cause wins to happen, but I think he can screw things up enough to send the team in the wrong direction - even if he's a pretty smart person.

So I think this is an important move for the Cubs, yes.

Ozzie evidently mentioned he wants on our staff. Even as a 3rd Base Coach. With the supposed want for 2-3 Latin coaches, I'm actually not totally opposed to that.

I'm sure we can find enough coaches that can relate to latin players without that attention-seeking lunatic.

One of the local guys (can't remember which) Tweeted yesterday that Renteria wasn't on a second interview (yet). It was a completion of his first interview, whatever that means. He's still recovering from a hip replacement, IIRC, so it's probably got something to do with that.

I will amend my statement from a few days ago and say that if Ozzie Guillen is coaching with the Cubs in any capacity, I'm done. They guy is an attention seeking whore and whoever is coaching the team will spend as much time dealing with Ozzie, Oney, tweets and the media than he will teaching or coaching what actually matters.

Stop worrying about this. It's not going to happen.

Why aren't you worried about Canseco getting the managerial gig? He's been campaigning incessantly too.

Whoever is the manager if/when this team wins is going to become a legend. He's not going to be the one to determine if they do win.

You're a Cubs lifer just like everyone else on this board. You aren't going anywhere. Also, this likely won't happen.

He could be like Kyle and at least try.

And I'm sure he'll be totally content being in the background and not saying idiotic things

That's just ridiculous. I think Ozzie would be a nice asset as a 3rd base coach.
