I think someone (davell?) posted a Phil Rogers article a few weeks ago mentioning Tony Pena. Wonder if he's being considered or if he'd come with Girardi as his bench coach like he was in NY.

I seem to recall Pena being just horrendous in KC

ABTY:

Mike Scioscia has made it known through back channels that he'll 'definitely listen' if the Cubs wanted to talk... At this point, there's no evidence that the Cubs are interested however...

Joe Maddon is not a possibility- Rays will not grant access... Could change if Maddon himself asks out, doubtful...

Interestingly, the last time a big name was leaked by the source that leaked the Girardi information last week was that the deal was done of Theo Epstein, also one week prior to it actually happening... Theo/Cubs postured however it was a done deal- Girardi posturing now... just sayin'...

Definitely not shocked that guys like Girardi and Scioscia might be itching to take over a team that is about to get a bump in young talent and resources so they can be the ones to get credit for a 20-30 game turnaround.

That was just this past season. Previously he's pretty middle of the road

Yeah I think it's mostly because of the awful lineup he had to deal with. Prior to this year he had Tex, A-Rod, Jeter, Cano, Swisher, Granderson, etc. in his lineup most of the time. Their 2013 line up on B-R is a joke compared to the previous 3 years...

If the Cubs hire Girardi we're in for a hell of a next 10 years of NL baseball. It would be a huge depressing letdown if you don't bag him. Lot of people are stoked for this.

It's pretty easy to see why Girardi may look at us as a better situation than that mess.

Especially when you consider that half of those players might not even be there next year and they have no one else in their system worthwhile to replace them.

The Yankees are a mess, and the fact that more teams are locking up their talent long term which is weakening the FA markets means they can't exploit it like they used to be able to. They can't build from within, and the money they need to spend this offseason the most is on their own players, which just brings them back to where they are now.

The Yankees are a sinking ship.

Wait, did that team really win 85 games. What am I missing?

6 games over pythag, 2 dominant pen arms, but yeah, still seems off

I just stumbled on a BP page looking for expected records: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/standings/

The three measurements they have are (in order) Pythag, player-stat based, and player-stat-based by strength of schedule.

The notable performances (6 wins +/- in any of the three measurements) are owned by the Yankees, Phillies, Tigers, and Cubs.

The Yankees and Phillies both outplayed expectations, Tigers and Cubs both underplayed.

The Tigers, Cubs, and Yankees all get further away from their record with each successive measurement BP offers; that is, player stats and schedule strength suggest the Tigers and Cubs should have been better than Pythagorean Expectation does, while it suggests that the Yankees should have been worse than their Pythagorean.

Unfortunately, as you mentioned, the bullpen may have a lot to do with that. I don't know where to find information on bullpens to try and correlate with these measures; but going back using just Pythag with http://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/MLB/2006-standings.shtml shows Girardi is +8 all-time as a manager in 7 seasons. ESPN's RPI (http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/rpi) gives a +2 over the same margin.

Not sure what to think of any/all of this?

Girardi is smart enough to want to get out of NY, but that doesn't guarantee he's coming to Chicago.

That was my point a few pages back. The Nats are also looking, they are ready to win now, have two of the best young players in the game, and he would be only a few hours drive from NY.

I would be surprised if Knorr wasn't the Nats next manager.

Wittenmyer was on Mully and Hanley and basically said that when they were having their discussions as to how to cover this story, the question came up as to whether or not to do profiles on different candidates...and ultimately, they were like well, there's really only one candidate.

The local media seems to be really sure about this, FWIW. I don't know if that's based on information they have or just connecting dots. But there's really quite a bit of smoke at this point.

I'm just assuming it happens. Girardi really wanted the job in the past and has really good reasons for wanting out of NY. Unless he's doing an *incredible* job of trying to use us to get more money from the Yankees, this is basically a done deal.

Ugh Mully and Hanley were throwing out some terrible names this morning, including Ozzie Guillen, Don Cooper and Bob Brenly.
