Some of that 30 pounds will come back on during the season though. It's not like he's 230 pounds forever.

I think that's a pretty common progression for position players, Pujols famously would show up ripped for ST and then get softer as the year progressed. Workouts aren't as rigorous in season, you're trying to preserve your body over 120-160 games, much more travel so your habits can get out of whack, etc. Very nice to see he's progressed from previous Spring Trainings though, bodes well for multiple reasons.

If he can come close to holding this weight, is it possible LF becomes an option? I know we've heard no previously, but this is the best he's looked at least.

He'd probably still have to hit a ton to provide value there.

If they can stick a three truth's guy like Adam Dunn in LF who has cataclysmic bad defense and they still get a positive WAR out of him, I'd be morbidly curious to see what we can get out of Vogelbach considering he's actually a good, well rounded, and balanced hitter who will hit for average and not strike out 220 times a year.

Adam Dunn's minor league career:

.304/.425/.525

1483 PA, 270K/230BB

Vogelbach:

.297/.386/.515

878 PA, 139K/110BB

Let's not get ahead of ourselves with Vogelbach's bat just yet.

Yeah, that's what I mean. I'm saying just because he looks good now, let's not start penciling him in as a 230 pound player, since he'll be right back to 260 in a couple of months

You go drop 30 pounds, then spend 2 months eating [expletive] and traveling nonstop and see how quickly it comes right back.

30 pounds during a month of camp and a month of the season? wtf

The food options in the minors are pretty brutal. Really odd that teams don't spend more on nutrition at those levels.

The clubhouse for the Mobile Bay Bears was constantly stocked with peanut butter and jelly, soda, and cheetos.

Should a minor league system nutritionist + whatever they need to make sure the team gets fed quality food when they're at the parks/on the road, clubhouse stocked with healthy snack options. Everyone knows what they should be eating and healthy options to maximize their performance, blah blah. I'd probably have 2 strength & conditioning coaches per team and a dedicated speed coach for the minor league system.

Kinda nice to hear this from him:

“In the offseason, I really took it seriously to get myself in shape so there was no question about whether I could play first base or am I only going to be a DH?” Vogelbach, who ranked No. 10 among the Cubs’ Top 20 Prospects in 2013, said. “I want to play first base, I want to be on the field. That’s the type of player I am, I want to be on the field at all times.”

And the money quote:

In the first month, he lost 15 pounds. He dropped seven more in November, and lost 10 more during the holidays. He eliminated bread from his diet, drank lots of water, and ate an overload of grilled chicken, black beans and rice. He’s not a big fan of vegetables, so the nutritionist recommended vitamins that would fill that void. Breakfast was either a hard boiled egg or a protein shake.

Seriously, is it healthy to lose 15# in a month?

I don't think it's that big a deal in the first month if you're hoping/needing to lose a good bit more than that. The 7-10 pounds/month that followed is more of the normal/healthy range for consistent weight loss.

Did you see that girl from Biggest Loser, she lost 15 lbs in like 8 minutes.
