We should probably start to consider adding Liriano to the list of guys we tried to sign who are doing awesome.

I'm not going to sweat it. This is what he does. He goes lights out and then he goes 4IP with 6 walks and 6 ER his next couple times out. If I remember correctly, he and Feldman were offered identical deals and Liriano passed on it while Feldman jumped on it. Thus far I'm pretty happy with how it's all worked out.

Yup. I prefer Feldman, and the fact that both are doing well reinforces the idea that our guys know what they are doing.

I know it seems like a lifetime ago that we had Josh Donaldson, but he's currently hitting .324/.398/.536 with 8 HR. And only 27 years old.

Even if it does prove to be SSS, nobody can really fault the trade because nobody complained when he helped us land Rich Harden, but how was he viewed as a prospect back then? I didn't follow the farm quite as closely as I do now.

He'll likely have a couple of excellent months and wind up slightly below his career averages, in my opinion. At some point over his 4 year deal, I bet he makes an All Star team.

Hope so. This would be the best year for him to have his crappy year, if he's going to have one.

He's basically not throwing his change up at all this year, 1.3% of the time. He has thrown it at a 8.9% rate for his career and has been over 8 the last two. His FB velo is about 1 MPH down against his career averages. He's also throwing his curveball at a higher rate than he ever has in his career by more than double.

I wonder if he's avoiding his changeup at the behest of the coaching staff

Bruce Miles writing things I do not like... among them, criticizing the Fujikawa and Jackson signings because the Cubs "weren't going to contend for a couple more years anyway"

Especially wrong when they have obviously played much better than their record...Imagine where they'd be if they had gotten their first choice in Sanchez... and if they had signed Grilli.

Criticizing signing a 33 year old reliever is silly. Who cares how young your relievers are if they're effective? Especially when you are only paying $4.75M a year.

I don't have a problem putting them in the haven't worked out category, but to criticize them because they weren't going to contend does not make sense to me.

Same.

I have an issue with signing older guys to massive (think Pujols) commitments when you are going to get the majority of the value in the first 2 or 3 years of a deal and then be paying for that production for years thereafter, but otherwise, criticizing getting good value on guys for now is ridiculous. What the hell else were they going to do with the $5M they saved in 2013 by not signing Fujikawa? Or the $12 or w/e on Jackson?

Use the money saved on Fujikawa to upgrade Jackson to Sanchez?

What was the original offer to Sanchez?

Was that offer +$5M annually a better bet going forward than Jackson and Fujikawa for what they got?

1/3 of season 1 of those contracts isn't about to tell the whole story. And from someone who's bitched about needing bullpen help more than everyone else here combined......You're trolling at about 10 knots.

But that still falls under the why would you sign him when you aren't going to contend theory.

It sure looks that way now.

That's not how you judge such things.
