The one concern I have with the cubs building a new network is the total divorce from wide access WGN's broadcast platform. It's why they have a national standing to this date, its why the Blackhawks are using WGN to establish a national identity. I'd hate for the cubs to mistakenly completely walk away from that marketing model.

The blackhawks aren't available nationally on wgn.

The cubs aren't gaining national fans with wgn. That benefit stopped in the 90's specifically because it was no longer true that it was unique. Kids in 2013 aren't coming home from school with only 1 or 2 options to watch, and them being sucked into the cubs as a result.

Aren't some of the Hawks games on WGN America, or is that just the Bulls? Not that it matters because at most its like 5-6 games a year, but I thought some were national.

And yeah this. This isn't the 90's where the Saturday or Sunday night game is your national game of the week and that along with Cubs and Braves games are it if you don't live in a baseball market. Between ESPN, Fox, TBS and the MLB Network (not to mention MLB.tv) there are nationally broadcast games on almost every day of the week, in addition to hundreds of other TV channels, youtube, hulu, netflix, etc etc etc available for a 10 year old to watch when he gets home from school.

Like Jersey said, the Blackhawks aren't on the national WGN, only local. I live in Bloomington and I can't watch WGN Blackhawks games.

I have never seen one game on WGN America. I believe they play there on Sundays, and I have to settle for the opposing teams' broadcast on Center Ice. Although, a glitch in the system cancelled my Center Ice this month and I haven't bothered reordering it. WGN games are strictly an enticement to the local people who don't have cable.

I will say I am on board with firing Dave Kaplan into the sun. So there's that.

Capa: By the time you get this message, I'll be in the dead zone. It came a little sooner than we thought, but this means you won't be able to send a message back. So, I just wanted to let you know that I don't need the message because I know everything you wanna say. Just remember it takes eight minutes for light to travel from sun to Earth, which means you'll know we succeeded about eight minutes after we deliver the payload. All you have to is look out for a little extra brightness in the sky. So if you wake up one morning and it's a particularly beautiful day, you'll know Kaplan is dead.

There have been many talks of a potential overthrow of the current 'SportsNet Chicago', centered around a partnership between the Cubs, Blackhawks and NBC. Each have a 20% stake, each would prefer the network go the way of the YES agreement. NBC in particular is keen as it would also allow for another viable outlet for Notre Dame programming to its core fan base. Reinsdorf has long been aware of this, to the point of at one time himself suggesting a split of the Comcast SportsNet Chicago network into two; one Cubs/Hawks, another Bulls/Sox divisions (taking away SportsNet Plus). As of the buy date for the Ricketts family, their business outlined projected such a move taking place- now where it stands after the Mega deals, the softening of profit projections and the inability to secure state/city funds for renovations (something else that was projected in said outline) is anyone's guess however the industry sources I've chitchatted with still seems to believe the eventual outcome is a Cubs/Hawks package deal being shopped, bought and paid handsomely (no one knows just how popular the Blackhawks brand has become quite like NBC) and again, with the significant ND deal, a very public desire to acquire as much sports brands as possible and a controlling 60% combined stake already in an established network, most feel NBC gets it done...

Urge...to kill...fading...fading....

I will like the Blackhawks much more if their rising popularity somehow saves us from TV contract hell.

I know Mooney mentioned possible negotiations with Fox...I wonder if one of the pairs of teams might end up on a relaunched Fox Sports RSN and the others under the NBC/Comcast name.

I can't imagine any of these guys doing it on their own, and the only real partners are Fox, Comcast/NBC and Disney/ABC/ESPN. There's a slight chance that Tribune/WGN would want to do something big I guess, but I doubt it. I can still see Comcast/NBC just splitting itself two ways, with with separate partnerships. If they get $1.00 per subscriber with the current arrangement they could theoretically get $0.75 from a Cubs/Hawks channel and $0.50 from a CWS/Bulls channel. Comcast is certainly used to offering multiple channels within the same market, and I'm sure they can figure out the cost synergies.

You know, I sort of can't believe this hasn't happened before, now that I think about it. They've already done this with CSN California (A's) and CSN Bay Area (Giants) in the same general market.

Interesting. I didn't realize that was a thing.

It's only 10 years old. And the team that is probably the biggest draw has either been approaching/in bankruptcy, up for sale, going through a sale or going through its reorganization. And then you have the Blackhawks which went from a non-existent television entity when the network began to a huge draw. It's not surprising to me that it hasn't happened yet.
