Opening day of the college baseball season is a month from today!

“We feel we know who the top five are today,” said Jason McLeod, the Cubs senior vice president of scouting and player development. “We’ll spend a lot of time with them. As things change, we’ll just scout the guy we think has the most impact for us.”
According to McLeod, there’s a deep pool of talented high school pitchers and “interesting”college position players.

“Every year someone is going to explode on the scene,” McLeod said.

Really need a college pitcher to breakout this year.

Nah I'd rather just take a highly regarded bat and keep going quantity with arms.

We NEED an ace type guy. If I've got another Kris Bryant or Jonathan Gray decision on my hands, I'm taking the pitcher this time.

Just let that guy emerge from the quantity approach. Use the big pick with the big money on the safer position player.

Get enough 18 year olds who throw 90+ and we should stumble onto a TOR type or two.

Then again, the best college positional prospect is a guy who profiles as a really awesome leadoff hitter, so whatever. Take the pitcher. I don't care.

With pitching being the strength of this draft, it may have helped them to decide on Bryant over Gray, if it was really close.

A Jonathan Gray type talent at 4 this year would fit us phenomenally.

Agree but who? is the question. Kolek and Beede could be guys to watch I suppose. Kolek already has hit 100 and Beede looks like he may put it all together this season if some of the scouting I have read is true indicating he may have improved his control. Any others?

But I also like Turner and Braxton Davidson, though I have not seen the latter this high yet. So much can happen between now and June. It'll be fun.

The only other college pitcher to consider besides Rodon, Hoffman, and Beede is Aaron Nola, but I don't think anyone views him as a TOR guy.

I guess the best thing to hope for is either the Marlins and White Sox being too cheap to sign Hoffman or Beede breaking out.

Yup, my top 5 right now (assuming Rodon and Hoffman are gone) is Beede, Kolek, Jackson, Gatewood, Turner

The fact that Turner is a "leadoff hitter" doesn't bother me. If the defense, speed, plate discipline and hit tool all look good, I'd have no problem taking someone with so-so power that high.

I mean, yeah...but meh.

I'm not gonna be upset if they take him or anything but I'm just not so overwhelmingly enthused about that profile that I'd strongly favor it over drafting a pitcher.

My interpretation as well. I am almost always going to side with the elite college bat, but at least at the outset, that doesn't seem to be the case here.

At this time last year, there were probably like 2 or 3 people in this forum who knew who Jonathan Gray was.

Guys like Sean Newcomb (mediocre competition), Michael Cederoth (control issues/questions on the quality of his slider), Luke Weaver and Brandon Finnegan (size) have flashed TOR stuff. If they can alleviate their negatives and put it all together, they could get some helium into the top 5.

I'm decidedly anti-Nola at 4 unless his stuff ticks up.
