It'll be interesting to see what Long actually gets. He's asking for a team to take a pretty big financial risk for a player who has declined, and especially poor in his contract year.

According to NFL source, #Bears did not restructure any contracts over the weekend. Doesn't mean business wasn't completed today though.

emery is going to need to provide trestman with a way of protecting cutler so we don't have to forfeit any more games and miss out on the playoffs because of it, again.

We can restructure at any time though, right. Hopefully discussions have at least progressed enough where they have it lined up when we close on a FA target and need room. I don't mind not having restructures done at this point.

It also doesn't address cuts which can be done in a snap- looking at Garza, Davis, Hester

But we have to re-sign Armando Allen and Jason Campbell!!

Anyone have any numbers on Bushrod in 2010 and 11? Seem to recall he was decent for a couple years. Only gave up 4 sacks but a ton of pressures this season.

I'd be surprised if Garza gets cut.

Sure, but we have to be under the cap starting tomorrow at the open of free agency. So we can't go sign some big rich free agent and go over cap and then go back to restructure to get back under.

But can't we come to an informal agreement first, then make space?

i'd be surprised if he didn't.

Its always hard to tell with centers. There's this weird bias towards protecting the QB/center relationship. I don't think Emery is like that, but you never know.

I hope you're right. Garza isn't good.

This is a pleasant surprise.

Sure, but that's a dangerous game.

Releasing Hester would create a cap savings of $2,107,523. He would carry dead space of $833,335.

Releasing TE Kellen Davis would create a cap savings of $2.5 million. He would carry dead space of $1.35 million.

Releasing TE Matt Spaeth would create $1.625 million in cap savings. He would carry dead space of $333,334.

Find it unlikely we'll cut BOTH Spaeth and Davis. Guess its possible if they've got a guy ready to sign though. At any rate, those moves alone would put us 13 under, restructure Briggs, Peppers(if needed) and extend Tillman and Jennings, we'd have plenty of wiggle room.

cutting spaeth and davis leaves us with who, rodriguez and kyle adams? draft eifert and go cheap on the other spot. i hear rodriguez has been working out with marshall and jeffery this offseason. i'm not enamored with spaeth as he's regarded as a blocking tight end, but he really isn't good at blocking.

Well I'm pretty sure the Bears won't have a player on the cover of madden this year.....they are doing a past vs. present thing so each team has a former and current player in the field of 64. The Bears got Matt Forte for the present guy (ok I guess but someone like Marshall would have given them a better shot). But for the past player, the Bears, a team with the most HOFers ever and some of the greatest players to ever play the game...Butkus, Payton, Sayers, etc, were given Ron Rivera for their past entry. Oh and he's going up against Barry Sanders in the 1st round.

I think the idea was for it to be guys who had been in Madden, since this is the 25th anniversary edition.

That said, there has to have been a better choice.

At least 4 pro bowl 85 defense members played into the Madden era. Can only think Rivera's current coaching status propelled him.

One source said Tuesday morning that the Bears are “hot on (Phil) Loadholt,” the right tackle for the Minnesota Vikings, although adding a right tackle would not necessarily address the greatest need on the line.

A source also said the team is involved in conversations with the top left tackles on the market: Jake Long of the Miami Dolphins and Jermon Bushrod of the New Orleans Saints. The Bears’ interest level in Long is difficult to gauge, though.
