Any chance we sign two FA tackles? Would love to add Barrett Jones in the draft, too. Those 3 plus two in house guys for the other spots and we may be pretty decent on the OL.

Two tackles would be a waste of resources; Webb would be a suitable RT but they need 2 interior linemen at least.

I always wonder about having tackles switch sides... does it ever work out really well (at least in the short term)? I feel like that would have to be an incredibly awkward transition for most of them to make...tantamount to trying to throw/shoot/hit or anything else with the opposite hand.

Unless they think Webb/Carimi/Louis could handle guard duties? Two new tackles plus Jones at center.

PFF on Loadholt:

the Bears are taking a good long look at Vikings right tackle Phil Loadholt. The mammoth lineman finished as our 8th ranked right tackle last year on the back of some dominant line blocking with the Vikings averaging a ridiculous 8.6 yards per carry on all runs outside right tackle. That’s one way to add a spark to a running game in desperate need of one.

Carimi is fine (if not very good) as a run blocker, isn't he?

We need [expletive] pass blocking.

That's more what I was thinking. Carimi was decent at guard when he played there last season, wasn't he? And Louis was solid from what I remember.

Tait handled it well but I agree that it's tough. I think the tackle has to be athletic to even consider it, and anyways, most teams are apt to play guys who can handle LT there first.

I don't think Loadholt can handle a switch too well.

PFF has Loadholt as 4th in run blocking, 27th in pass blocking for OT's. For comparison, Webb is 43rd in pass blocking. Obviously LT and RT difference there.

@seankjensen

Source confirms to me what I reported earlier, that the #Bears interest in Jake Long is real. Again, the key is money.

Sean Jensen tweeted a bit ago that he thinks that whatever shakes out, that Carimi will be competing for a guard spot.

The Bears seem to like Webb at tackle. I feel you need one guard in case Louis is slow coming back and/or Carimi can't handle guard full time. And I really want Garza replaced.

Where is Carimi? IIRC, he had a similarly (to Loadholt) dramatic "split" between run and pass.

Not sure, going off tweets here. Don't have the PFF access.

Gotcha. Thanks. Unless I'm remembering completely wrong, I'm not sure Loadholt is much of an upgrade over Carimi as a RT (in either department).

David, you're right about Carimi - he did have crazy run/pass splits.

Since Loadholt is similar, that's another reason I'm less interested in Loadholt. Of course the main reason I'm not interested in him is that means Webb is the LT next season.

They better be sure Long is healthy and good to go if they give him the money it's gonna take. If he is, then it's a move worth getting excited about, obviously...but it scares the hell out of me that we could be paying 8 figures for worse performance at LT than we've had.

If we sign Long, I'll be excited. Hell, I'd be happy with Bushrod-just would be hoping we'd get a Dustin Keller or something else with him.

iirc, he was rated as the top run-blocking RT and worst pass-blocker by them around midseason

he's a guard

he's not even a guard, he's a run-blocking RT. he's too tall and lanky to be a good guard.

12.10: RUMOR! Another one from Adam Schefter who is mentioning that the Eagles are one of the teams looking at Jake Long. What does that say about the future of Jason Peters and his $11m cap hit next year in Philadelphia? Peters was our top ranked tackle in 2011, while Long was top two in both 2009 and 2010, but both men have some massive question marks regarding their health. Long only finished 46th in our offensive tackle rankings last year (out of 80) and there’s a worry he’ll never regain the form he showed in his early years in the league.

14.35 RUMOR! Reports earlier today had division rival Chicago pushing hard for Phil Loadholt but also according to Tom Pelissero the Vikings are on the verge of a deal with their giant right tackle. Whilst he has had his struggles throughout his career as a pass protector Loadholt was much improved this season and graded positively as both a pass protector (+7.0) and a run blocker (+11.1). The latter is the key thing Loadholt brings to the table with the Vikings averaging 8.4 yards per carry to the outside of Loadholt they don’t want to risk losing his impact on the ground game.

@seankjensen: Source close to Antoine Winfield tells me #Bears "would appeal to him." He fits scheme, and I'm sure he wants to play for contender.

Not sure how they'd make the finances work but that would be an incredible trio of corners.
