From a Stanford football player:

Got to believe Te'o was the victim here. He would always ask us if we knew his mystery girl after we'd play them....

i'm still leaning in the direction that he was duped and lied about the nature of the relationship. my first instinct when seeing a clip of him talking about her was that he was weirdly enamored with this person and almost sending a message out to her. and i can't see how "he's a sociopath" is way more believable than "he's gullible and wanted to believe his dream girl was real." either i'm naive or he is.

but if this goes on much longer without the ever-creepy ND releasing any proof, he totally was in on it (and i WANT him to be on it because then i don't have to feel bad for anyone). won't phone records solve everything? if he made up a wild story for publicity, there might not 8-hour phone calls or whatever. there should also be a ton of emails/gchat transcripts/etc. supporting his story.

Please tell me that ND students held a candlelight vigil when his fake girlfriend died

OMFG please. There's not much that could make this story better at this point, but this would.

Again, we know he was making crap up and telling it to others. At the very least, he was making stuff up to tell his parents.

So how much of a stretch is it to go from he made up parts of it to he and some other guy made up the whole thing?

Him being completely innocent in this simply isn't true. He made up some of his own details and told them to at least his family.

I mean, Sammy Sosa corked his bat, so he's a known cheater.

Great example:

So you believed Sammy when he said he wasn't aware the bat was corked?

god no. and i love sammy probably more than mr loves te'o.

for some reason, i had it in my head that this girl was in hawaii the whole time following the accident, while getting leukemia treatment, etc. then i realized she was allegedly in california. i also didn't realize the accident apparently occurred 8 months before she died of cancer.

so the love of his life almost dies in a car accident and begins undergoing treatment for leukemia over the span of 8-9 months and te'o doesn't go see her. and apparently the car accident occurs 8 months before she "died of cancer," which means it was in january, which means te'o had nothing but time on his hands after the 2011 football season was over. and he doesn't go visit her.

sociopath seems more likely than gullible to me at this point. or shittiest boyfriend ever.

I can't believe Stanford had the balls to tweet this last night:

@StanfordFball: But wasn't @KULABAFI TD real? #gostanford

(@KULABAFI is Stepfan Taylor.)

Either way there is clearly something wrong with him. Best case scenario for him, he's a complete flake who is able to believe he's deeply in love with someone who is dying and he's never met or maybe he doesn't believe he loved her and he was just gung ho to use what he thought was her tragic illness to further his Heisman cause. So he's either a pathetic weirdo or a monumental [expletive]. These are the best case scenarios for people who are hoping he's not complicit with the hoax.

0 for 2. A big part of many people's arguments regarding Sosa's potential steroid use was that he cheated by corking his bat, so obviously he had no problem using steroids. Similar to how I'm likely to commit murder because I speed.

That is not similar at all.

Golic took up for him mostly, basically saying it didn't make sense for Notre Dame to back him as staunchly as they are, unless they're extremely confident in their findings. That said, he also mentioned he didn't get to know him well and he didn't go out much, when there were get togethers.

Because college football programs never foolishly stick by somebody.

I still think the best case for him is the gay beard angle.

i think it's the most likely explanation. any other explanation requires him to a schizophrenic or stupid on a braindead level.

Very true, but damn, you'd think they'd learn. In this case though, is it possible Notre Dame could get in any trouble? I'm not seeing how anyway.

She told him she was in a car accident about 3 months after they started corresponding (email, twitter, phone, whatever). the car accident is the hook the the catfish game. he's on the line, now she gets cancer and it's over. he's going to spend the next several months emailing, talking on the phone, texting, and setting up meetings in Hawaii that she doesn't make and then excuses.

yes, if you think she's in hawaii and he never sees her or that they've been dating 4 years before she's in a car accident, etc., if those are the facts, it's hard to believe he's that gullible. But that's never been the story.

I'm not sure how they could get into real trouble.

that's not my understanding of the timeline.

Some time in 2012: Kekua has a car accident somewhere in California that leaves her "on the brink of death" (Sports Illustrated). But when? Eight months before she died of cancer, in September, reports ESPN. "About the time Kekua and Manti became a couple," reports the South Bend Tribune. April 28, reports SI.

June 2012: As Kekua recovers from her injuries, doctors discover she has leukemia. She has a bone-marrow transplant.

so in june 2012, she's still recovering from her car accident injuries. she clearly was "dating" te'o by this point, correct?

My money is on Lennay Kekua being Ronaiah Tuiasosopo's cross dressing identity. We'll start hearing stories about how Te'o remembers Lennay's gun digging into his hip.

I am inclined to believe that its possible a 20 year old could lie about meeting with his girlfriend a number of times because he was embarrassed about the fact he’d never actually met his girlfriend. That lie makes sense to me and seems consistent with what I think a dweeb 20 year old would do.

It honestly seems like these massive god people are particularly susceptible to establishing deep emotional connections, and seem to lack a certain critical eye.

That said, in the Woj interview he seems to be basking in talking about it. Its a bit suspicious, but I agree that ND having a few weeks to get as much info as they could, probably has enough info to fully corroborate Manti’s current version of the story.

I will also say, Swarbrick going up there and doubling down with so much gravitas makes him and ND look like a dumbass. Him recalling dates and times and facts like he was detailing the d day operation was pathetic. He should have just been like “Well it appears we have all been duped. The good news is nobody died. Manti is a bit shaken up but hes about to become a millionaire” and then just walked out of the room.

yeah, he thought they were in whatever relationship they were in by june. he wasn't dating her or whatever when she got in the accident.

who knows how much of a relationship te'o thought they were in. the SBT did pull the story with a lot of talk about them being a couple, some of which wasn't directly sourced to anyone. whether that's b/c they think they were duped or b/c they took some poetic license with the info they had, i don't know.

if he was duped, the whole point would be that she "wouldn't" meet him or kept putting it off for various reasons. i was totally catfished when i was 16. the major differences in circumstance would be: 1) it was 1999 and it was a lot harder to see if people existed on search engines and stuff 2) no "real" boys were ever going to talk to me, so i had more motivation than te'o the football star to believe it was legit. it continued off-and-on for years and there was always drama, so the car accident and leukemia don't surprise me. i think the guy was in intensive care with sepsis (!) once or something and i received "updates" from family members. there was also an eating disorder drama and a past sexual abuse drama, although those might have been for real. as with te'o, the whole thing was so exciting that i would go on and on about it to anyone who would listen.

(luckily, i didn't confirm for sure that this person was actually female until 6-7 years later when the whole thing was long over. at that point i was embarrassed for about five minutes and then decided it was hilarious. it finally made sense, and it's better that a normal looking girl with identity issues knew my address than a creepy old man killer.)

of course there's a big possibility he was in on it. but if not, i would believe that it was one messed up person who got unwitting people to help him (like the girl who posed for the pictures). not a big conspiracy of people out to get te'o.

I get that he could be embarrassed about having an online girlfriend... But then why tell people about her voluntarily, when you know you're too embarrassed to tell the truth anyway?

The whole thing doesn't add up. Actually leaning towards the beard angle.

Seems like they started talking, things got serious, and when it became apparent that he wanted to actually meet the fake girl, they faked a car accident. After she recovered from that, they had to make up another story to keep him away so they came up with leukemia.
