Ellis Johnson is surfacing as a top candidate to become Auburn's defensive coordinator.

So far, recruit retention is looking pretty good with the Malzahn hire. Of Auburn's top 5 recruits, 4 reaffirmed their commitment yesterday.

Carl Lawson (DE and ranked #2 overall at Rivals) seems to be wavering. However, Rueben Foster (ILB and # 6 overall), Dee Liner (DE and #22 overall), Earnest Robinson (WR and #45 overall), and Jeremy Johnson (QB and #94 overall) all appear to be staying.

Because nobody really cares about Wisconsin just like nobody really cares about Arkansas. So when he churns out 8-4 season after 8-4 season and gets pounded by Bama and LSU year after year, nobody will look at their schedule since they'll continue to be largely irrelevant nationally.

People may not care about Wisconsin nationally, but the fact is, they'll all be sitting down to watch them in the Rose Bowl, just like they did the past 2 seasons.

I think there's more potential to play in a nationally relevant bowl game at Wisconsin than at Arkansas.

$4M > $2.5M

Sure, but there is a much stronger chance that he loses in the SEC, especially since Ark isn't one of the top recruiting draws and I don't think BB's recruiting skills have been all that special.

I don't know. I'm sure it was the money but looking at the long term it seems like a lateral, high risk move to me.

Maybe he just doesn't like it here anymore.

I'm hearing rumors that Alvarez might coach the Rose Bowl

Yeah, how well did BB actually recruit? The Wisconsin brand recruits lineman and running backs by itself practically. Getting Russell Wilson was great but did he facilitate that or was the opportunity just right for Wilson?

I don't think he did all that well, I believe Cryst and some of the assistants he took with him last year were mostly getting past recruits and doing a lot of game planning and prepping. BB is a pretty bad in game coach too (TO management, how he had drives earlier this year where he would sub 3 QB's in and out during it, etc.) I don't think he's all that big of a loss for Wisconsin and I think finding a comparable coach won't be that hard.

BB was brought in to close some recruiting deals, but he relies heavily on his assistants to recruit, maybe more than others.

BA will most likely run the prep for the Rose Bowl and be a fill-in as a head coach, but will give all playcallings to Canada (OC) and Ash (DC).

If Barry has known for 2 weeks that BB was leaving, he should have his short list of 3-4 guys. I'd expect Paul Chryst to be on there, and he'd be great to bring back and keep continuality with the program and the players love him. Darrell Bevell is being thrown out, but I'm not a huge fan. Mel Tucker (former badger DB, current DC/Assistant HC Jack Jaguars) is an interesting name being brought up.

Most want a Wisconsin man being brought in, as the feeling was that BB was never fully accepted by all Wisc fans, and that had a part in him leaving.

Wiscy only has one recruit in the ESPN top 300 this year, where OSU and Michigan have about a dozen each

Is that unusual? Wisconsin seems to make a living off of turning 3-star lineman and a decent set of RBs into a tough ground game. I don't recall seeing them at the top of many team ranking lists

That pretty much is the norm. Wisconsin/surrounding states aren't exactly high school football hotbeds and it would be a pretty hard sell to 4-5 star guys in the south/west to get them to Wisconsin over the other likely schools they had at their choosing. Plus if they were drawn to the Midwest Michigan/ND/OSU are obviously going to have the upper hand.

Yep, the Bearcats pretty much own the state of Ohio.

That's what I suspect. Plus there really isn't any good football in Kentucky and won't be forever, so you'd get all 8 of the TVs in that state. Someone get Big Jim on the phone.

:(((((((((((

I think Stoops was a great hire for UK. Brooks showed that you can win a couple of games in conference, dominate weaker out of conference schools, and go to a bowl game every year. Most Kentuckians are happy with that. The test for Stoops will be if he can go beyond a 7-5 record and the Music City Bowl. If he can, excellent. If not, this was probably a bad decision on his part. Unless he turns Kentucky around and goes beyond what the program did under Brooks, I don't see how he could use this job as a stepping stone type gig. He would have been better off staying at FSU (or waiting for somewhere like Wisconsin).

Gundy turned us down. Louisville is trying to get an extension worked out to keep Strong.

Hard to win many bidding wars against T Boone Pickens?

His last four recruiting classes were ranked at 56, 40, 87, and 43. Not so good...

Yet 3 straight Rose Bowls (the last one at least gets an asterisk).

I read some analysis somewhere a few years ago that concluded, I think, that OL was where recruiting services miss with stars more than any other and often pretty badly. I think this analysis was stars v. making an NFL roster or something like that, so I guess if stars aren't intended to predict NFL prospects maybe it's not relevant. But teams like Wisconsin, Iowa, BC comes to mind, seem to find or create out of nothing some pretty talented lineman among the riff raff.

Makes sense. Kids are getting so big in HS is comes down to coaching and the strength and conditioning more than anything else. I don't really think any true freshman should ever start on the OL and it seems like we are seeing more of that now a days.

And Papa John's - Louisville is apparently putting together a really hefty extension to keep Strong.

I doubted Gundy was a realistic option from the beginning (largely because of T-Boone)and speculation both here and in Oklahoma is that he used Tennessee and Arkansas interest to show OSU administration how valued he is around the country.

I'm at the point where if Strong turns us down, I'm all for giving the job to either Petrino or Butch Davis and just hoping they don't do something stupid.

Pete Thamel of SI reporting that Charlie Strong is staying at Louisville. The way these coaching searches have gone, that probably means he'll be announced shortly.

Assuming Thamel is right, just go get Petrino or Davis.

Malzahn just fired every football coach at Auburn. Gangsta.

Kelly did that when he took over, save 1 guy. Not a bad idea when the program needs an overhaul.

I support this move. In the short term, it is going to damage some relationships with 2013 commitments. However, top recruiters on the last staff, Trooper Taylor and Curtis Luper, were rumored to be enablers in many cases and contributed to AU's overall culture issues. It's best just to start fresh even if we take a hit on recruiting this year. Malzahn is a pretty good recruiter himself, so I believe we'll keep the recruits on O.

AU hired Ellis Johnson as the defensive coordinator late last night. He has been the D coordinator at Alabama, Mississippi State, Clemson, and South Carolina before becoming the head coach at Southern Miss this past season. HE went 0-12 as a head coach, but he's had some great defenses at most of his stops as d-coordinator, and was also interviewing to replace Stoops as FSU's defensive coordinator. I think it's a solid hire.

Head Coach Football, University of Tennessee

The Head Coach of Football is responsible for initiating various aspects of the Football program, such as recruiting 2* and 3* players, training them from time to time, and attempting to not break NCAA rules, especially while on ESPN cameras (Looking at you, LK). • Generate additional funds for support of the program. Or, not. That's what our academics programs are for. #AmIRight
