Looking at the Bears oline situation for next year, how many starters do you look to bring in? Carimi is the only one guaranteed a spot and I'm unsure if you keep Garza and look to resign Louis.

I'd re-sign Louis but there's no guarantee he'd be ready for the start of the season.

I hope they can replace Garza because he's not a good center.

My ideal offseason would be a FA LT that is better than Webb and start over him, resign Louis (can't see why not he can't be ready by start of next season as ACL isn't that important for an OL and he can wear a brace) or an OG if he can't, and 2 draft picks (1st or 2nd and then 4th or 5th). Fill in backup OLs after that. Sure it could be as bad as the OL now, but getting a better LT than Webb is a win for me and for Cutler.

Regardless of what Bears actually do... with Scott/Rachel/Louis/Spencer (plus Mannelly as well) all being FAs and possibly cutting Garza, they are gonna have to go after OLs this offseason.

I figure we should aim to have 3 good/really good offensive lineman for next season. I think that if you have that, you can get by with some lesser talent at the other two spots. Draft a couple of OL and sign a FA. Hopefully out of that you can get two guys who can start, alongside Carimi.

I agree but I know that we also need at least one young developing LB and CB along with a TE

I think of those, you can skip CB for this year. Our secondary has been a strength this year, and replacing Urlacher and getting a pass catching TE seem to be more important.

Dj Moore and Kelvin Hayden are FAs though. Tillman and Jennings the year after. But yeah the Bears are probably going to forgo the CB position due to lack of picks. No reason to pick another in the 5th or 6th round.

If Knox isn't back by next year I'd like to see a late WR pick to build some depth to the position.

Yeah as of today....I'd go OL, TE 1-2. Then CB, LB, or DT in the 4th. Then WR in the 5th followed by one of the 2 positions not picked in the 4th or even a.....wait for it....Quarterback.

Yeah, I'd like to get a backup QB at some point as well. Just feel like there's so many other areas of need to address.

I too want a backup QB, there are just so many areas that need addressing and I would wait for a backup QB next year when there are better prospects on the board. This year's QB class is weak but very strong on the DL.

You gotta get 2 quality OL and 1 TE at the very least in FA or through the draft. If we could sign Finley or another decent TE to open up holes on the field and lay down a competent block occasionally we should be looking good. I really thought Zach Miller should have been a target this past offseason to be a stopgap TE.

The QB was a 6th round pick. The Bears 6th rounder this year, got cut. Typical 6th rounders (especially down where the Bears will be selecting) are lucky to make the roster. A developmental QB in the 6th is just as useful as any other 6th round pick.

As for the TE thing, I'm trying to work out the money for next year, but the Bears are going to be pretty tight this offseason from what I can tell. Peppers and Tillman get big raises, though I'd imagine both restructure. Cutler will get an extension. Melton needs to be re-signed for a lot more than he's currently making. Then you still have the Urlacher issue. I personally think the Bears bring him back on a 1-year deal (if he is willing to accept). If not, LB goes way up on the priority list with the potential replacement, Roach also being a FA. And the Bears have to replace a lot of depth, including both backup CBs, their top backup LB (Hayes), starter at SLB. Both backup QBs are FAs. All of Rachal, Spencer, and Louis are FAs. Then you have to worry about guys like Tillman, Jennings, Briggs, Wright, Hester and Gould all being FAs in 2014 (not to mention Cutler).

I'd rather save all the money they can for OL help. This is a deep FA class at LT. OL gets huge edge over TE for need. But TE is also a deep position in free agency, and is combined with a weak draft at the position. I'd hate to take Eifert in the 1st. But the Bears could be drafting too late for Ertz in the 2nd. After that, you're looking at a 4th round TE. AT that point, I'd rather just take my chances with Davis/Rodriguez and co. again, unless there's some basketball player out there that is a potential stud.

@BearReport: I'm told #Bears GM Phil Emery was on hand for last night's Rutgers v Louisville game.

Khaseem Greene is a really good LB for Rutgers. Has 125 tackles this year. Looks more like a WLB to me (Briggs spot) than a potential Roach replacement though. Could also be looking at Logan Ryan, CB for Rutgers. 2nd-3rd round pick. Should be able to play outside or nickel.

Louisville only has an undersized center and a 3rd day pick at CB. Not much else draftworthy or draft eligible on that team.

Yeah, the first guy I thought of was Logan Ryan.

Jake Long tore his triceps yesterday. I'm betting he will hit the FA market.

It seemed likely anyways. It's a shame he was having a down year before the injury

Ryan Clady will surely be re-signed/tagged so we have to hope for Brandon Albert to hit free agency, I think.

So Albert/Long could be worthwhile targets for us. I hope Clady can hit FA cause I do think he'd come here to reunite with Jay and Brandon.

It's a flashback to the Williams draft.

This OL did a good job yesterday as far as pass blocking but Forte had nothing to run thru.

There biggest needs are OL/TE as mentioned.

But maybe I'm too critical of Bears' playcallers but am I the only one who thinks dating back to Turner' 1st go-around that they have all been crap? I'm starting to question my own judgement.

Maybe this is overly picky but I always hear people talk about "play calling", when in fact the problem is the actual offensive scheme. It's not as much about calling the right plays as it is designing the right plays in the first place. The SF game was a perfect example of a team that was properly coached and prepared with a scheme to take advantage of their own strengths and attack the opponents' weaknesses, while the Bears were running a high school attack. The entire plan seems to be just have Cutler get the ball to Marshall somehow and then either run right or left a lot.

Albert's getting tagged by KC. Jake Long will be very available though and I'd take the chance with him.

Jermon Bushrod will also be a free agent but just like Clady, I can't imagine New Orleans letting a franchise LT go when they have an elite QB.

The Bears continue to run the Power O instead of mixing up the runs and the plays. I only noticed once that the Bears split out Forte wide for the touchdown. That should be done way more often.

Overall Tice is a horrible choice to run this offense. During his tenure, Lovie has shown he cannot manage to find a creative playcaller to run the offense.

The Bears do have some legit play designs. In general, I don't think playbooks are all that different around the league. Play callers just call the plays that fit best with their personnel and geared against the defense they are playing against. For example, Martz's offense both called all 7-step drops vs. the Giants (9 sack half game) and the 3-step drops from the Dallas game earlier that year. Tice has called some 7-steps, some moving pockets, some designed rolls, some 3-steps, some shotgun, etc. Granted, the Bears play callers suck at this, but I think the ability is there.

As for the Forte out wide thing, it has to be the right situation. Gotta catch the team in man and get Forte 1-on-1 with a LB. It's easier to call that near the goalline as nobody runs zone inside the 10-20. Forte out wide in a zone is pointless as he's probably only has 1 route he's running with no adjustments on the fly.
