How has Riley Reiff and Jonathan Martin been this year?

Martin has been mediocre. Dolphins fans think he can really improve and are excited about him taking over LT now that Long is out.

Reiff has been a 6th lineman for the most part. But he did start on Thanksgiving and didn't allow a sack to Houston.

Riley Reiff might be our best run blocker, but he needs a little refinement in pass protection; he's not seeing the field yet in a starting capacity because Backus and Cherilus have been great at keeping Stafford clean, but i'm bullish on Reiff going forward

Latest round of mocks at Walter Football has the Bears taking G/C Jonathan Cooper in the first round for the second straight week.

If the draft went that way, I like Oday Aboushi more than Robey in the 2nd. I think Aboushi can stay at LT in the NFL. Dude is super athletic for a LT (unless that changed this year as I saw him a couple games last year and none this year).

I think a guy to watch out for the Bears 1st round pick is Xavier Rhodes. Big fan of him and his skill set.

I feel like the Bears have 2 draft scenarios. One they haul in a coup of nice FA Olinemen or another without and they rely on the draft. I think if you can get a good tackle in FA you go MLB or Eifert in the first round.

WR Keenan Allen (Cal), DT Sheldon Richardson (Mizzou) and injured RB Marcus Lattimore (South Carolina) have turned pro. Lattimore looks very interesting if he falls to the 5th or 6th round.

Ohio State's DT Johnathan Hankins gone too. Seen him mocked to Carolina on WalterFootball for over a month now.

At this point, I think they need look at Ogletree at ILB in the 1st and look OL with either Thomas, Fluker, Aboushi, or Warford in the 2nd. Maybe grab Dion Sims in the 4th as I try and not get sucked into the I won't draft a TE from Mich St. b/c of Davis temptation.

I've played out this scenario a few times. I'd take Thomas or Fluker in the 1st because of the desperate need for OL, but there's a decent chance one will be there when the Bears pick in the 2nd. And even better chance guys like Warford (who I like a lot) and Aboushi would be there. Ogletree though, looks like a SLB to me, at least early in his career. I guess Briggs could call the D, or you could bring back Roach at MLB for a year or two though.

And despite the obvious Mich ST. comparison, Sims seems an awful lot like Kellen Davis. Both huge monsters known more for blocking coming out of college. Sims may have a better resume in the passing game, but I agree, it scares me too. There's a couple small school TEs that are interesting in the mid rounds, but I don't know that the Bears can wait that long to get a legit starter.

I'm pretty high on an LB in the first. DT if Sheldon is there and Melton leaves. I'd back up the truck for at least two starting OL in free agency and add another in the 2nd. CB in 3rd unless we didn't go LB in the 1st, then some combo of CB/LB in the 3rd/4th. Would take Lattimore in the 5th if he's there. Maybe another OL late as well.

Melton isn't leaving. Worst case, he's franchised. I don't think him leaving is even an option at this point unless the Bears are stupid. He's one of the best at his position in the league. Can't afford to lose him.

Bears don't have a 3rd unless we decide to trade Hester :beg:

Who would give up a 3rd for Hester?

Agreed. And to add to that, I think Sheldon will be long gone by the time the Bears pick in the first round.

I'm still amazed at how Melton has transformed himself over the past 5 years.

I'm in the camp of getting BPA at any position besides QB/RB and possibly S. Bears need young, good, possible "impact" players almost everywhere. That sounds like Emery there with what he said last year and he picked Shea in the 1st so maybe it's not a good idea. There's no need for Lattimore when you got Bush/Forte already. I guess you could stash him and when he's ready (and that's a big IF), you can cut Forte or Bush. If you want to draft a 3rd RB, think someone like LaMichael James/David Wilson/speed burner type RB. Not sure who would be there in the later rounds.

Anyway... It's going to be a big offseason for Emery. It'll be interesting to see who they go after in FA, who get resign/extended or restructure/cut/etc, and who they draft in the first 2 rounds. Does anybody know how the Bears salary cap look for next year yet? Just wondering if they got money to spend or if they gotta get creative for some cap space.

I agree, just thinking worst case.

And forgot we didn't have our third. Still, I hope they go hard after OL in FA and add another in the draft. Long is a must IMO.

My thinking with Lattimore is stashing him on PUP in 2013 and bringing him along in 2014. You have to think, given the age and miles on them, Forte and Bush will start deteriorating by then and you can plug in Lattimore. I don't think you can pass on a RB of Lattimore's quality by the 5th round, no matter your RB situation. I wouldn't take him earlier than the 5th, though, given the holes on the team.

Long was banged up and didn't play well this year? Just a blip or can we expect that he will bounce back?

I'd rather have Albert for that reason, if KC let's him on the open market.

But if Long is the only available potential top-level LT, the team has no choice but to to sign him.

Posted

Jake Long is starting to deteriorate. He hasn't been "the best" LT in the league for 2-3 years now. He's been playing or missed time with a ton of injuries too. But he's not Orlando Pace out there yet. He's still an above average LT. I actually think he is about as likely as any FA OL the Bears could get. I think you can give him a deal similar to Forte's. 4-5 years, but guarantee the money for only 2 years. At that point, probably going to want to cut him loose and hopefully get another 1st round LT in there the following year.

I think Albert and Clady get franchised. I think Vollmer stays in NE. Duane Brown isn't going anywhere (he may have been signed already). The Bears have come up with some big offseason prizes recently (Cutler, Peppers, Marshall) and now it's time to come up with one on the OL. Everything else will fall into place if you get stuff worked out up front.

At this point, I really don't care about defense. If the offense is good, the defense just has to be passable. The Bears still have enough talent to be much better than passable even if they take a step back from Urlacher at LB, Tillman and Jennings don't have probowl seasons again, or Peppers doesn't come out of hibernation (or whatever the hell he's been doing this season).
